how interesting. and disconcerting.
tonight, when i am thinking hard things, i sit
on the porch and what do i see?
not nighthawks or bats, but
hawk moths. Hawk Moths.
i had just watered the tomato plants. Not one
Hawk Moth, but several.
the season has been odd, and so…in keeping with that,
not so odd that here, in almost the last of August, they flutter.

but…disconcerting in that this is in keeping with a personal
change
no less
out of season
and the toad, SandRock, jumps.

in the final pages of The God of Small Things, by Arundhati Roy
she talks of the Love Laws
"Only that once again they broke the Love Laws. That lay down
who should be loved. And how. And how much."

the hawk moths must be coming into the mating game season, they swarm then. frog appreciates your small pond. now ive gotta ask you – would you like to wrap a tree trunk, or a rock or even a gate post and post it up on the wrapt, tied and marked by nature blog? some of the wraps are starting to colour up already. i can send you an author invite if youd like to be part of it…k. http://wraptrees.blogspot.com

I always learn so much from you…I did not know that they were called hawk moth…funny name since they act more like hummingbirds 🙂 Love the little fellow in your birdbath.

For several evenings, as we sit out in the back, illuminated by the twilight, a flitting winged creature comes over our heads and hovers, hovers, dancing in and out and among the yellow, pink, white and shocking pink four oclocks that we planted along one of our porch railings. Had no idea what it was, tried to take a photo but moved at lightning speed, like a hummingbird. Over the course of the last two nights, another came to join in this fluttering dance. Finally, this morning, I was able to identify our twilight dancers – hummingbird clear wing moths. Amazing!

Grace, Ive been finding caterpillars about the place and am wondering if they have time to evolve before the cold sets in. Sitting among the critters and just observing is a good thing.
