from Adventures with the Buddha
edited by Jeffery Paine
Chapter 1
“In all those centuries when Tibet was off limits to
foreigners, the first European to penetrate it’s forbidden terrain and to explore its unknown religion was also the last to do so thoroughly. Alexandra David-Neel (1868-1969)
mastered Tibetan fluently and thus could spend a dozen years in and around Tibet, masked in disguises ranging from a learned lama to an old beggar woman. She represented a new kind of religious investigator, the very opposite of those earlier seekers who expected to see monks flying blithely through the air. David-Neel was determined to find rational explanations for supposedly miraculous phenomena, yet for a skeptic she was nonetheless oddly intrigued by religion. …………
When she was fifty-five, then considered old age, she undertook a six month march on foot to Lhasa…with a single companion and carrying no provisions (so to avoid detection and expulsion)…which for near-suicidal audacity equals any daredevil expedition in history. My Journey to Lhasa (1927) made her world famous. Today, if a contemporary wants to “visit” the religion of old Tibet, it is mainly through her writings (particularly in Magic
and Mystery in Tibet, 1929) that such a journey can be vicariously made.”LikeLike
