the leaves began to deteriorate yesterday002

003

early, before Jude had posted about             deciding                                                 i had spent some time deciding that "next time" i will plant ONLY SUNFLOWERS and i looked for all the seed packets that are tucked around and decided to just sprinkle them all over now.  maybe by spring they might find a fortuitous crevise and plant themselves.  or be eaten.  either way.

and i wasn't going to put this pic.  it seemed too hokey, but it was/is true.  this is what i found amidst the dust wads under Her bookshelves when i was cleaning….004

Old cloth, old pots, new and rich color; I want to touch. Something about these old cloths, soaking up the color, the sun, the wind, the residue from the pots, turning them into the hues of autumn, echoes of the land, extending the connection to the Polvadera landscape. Seeing them spill out of your pots, fills me with spirit and comfort…

there were also two ears of corn that i’d gotten at store. cooked a third one and it was tough, like field
corn so these two were headed uncooked to the compost.
but were just sitting on the porch
and i looked at them and thought…maybe i could wrap
some cloth in the husks??? like cloth tamales???? see
what would happen in the dye?????
this would be credited to you and your truehearted dye
work (that it’s too bad you don’t blog about, but oh well,
i know i know.) (just have to say it now and then)

Cloth tamale, well of course, yes and when the sun cooks the cloth, the smell would be terrific!
grace, permit me to add this note on a different subject: One of our great planetary women has died, Wangari Maathai, Nobel prize winner, founder of the Green Belt Movement, and an inspiration to so many all across the world. When I receive news of this kind, that one of my heroes has died, I would normally light candles on my altar. Since I have come into this community of cloth, this morning I reached for my dyed cloth scraps and quickly stitched a few pieces together to create a little memory flag in honor of Wangari. Hung the little flag in a fir tree that we rescued from construction crews who were plowing down a nearby field in order to build a house.
Wangari once told the story of a forest burning and large animals standing by watching helplessly. A little hummingbird appeared and flew to a nearby stream, dipping its tiny beak into the water and carrying the drop to the forest fire. The animals watching asked, why, to which the hummingbird replied, “I may be small but I’m doing the best I can.”
Wangari likened herself to the hummingbird. Fly on Wangari in the great cosmic sky: we can all become hummingbirds…

Marti, i am just just oh….
I love her so much, such an incredible being…
and she died of cancer so i can not cry for her to
still be living that pain, but we are oh so going to
miss her presence here on this earth….
and yes. she would want this, for us to become the
    hummingbirds….
    thank you for telling me

…and doing the best we can – each one of us, what more can we do but that? It is enough.
Grace, Marti thank you for this story, these photos and words…
