that odd phenomenon…that i can SEE things somehow more objectively when the pic is here,  more than when i'm standing face to face with cloth?????    but, wanting to see here,  how i did the integrated applique   (Jude, Magic Diaries)  to the top quarter of this Circle of How it Really Is.  i remain with the desire to just pin things together, leave them loose.  but having done this, i feel ok with it.   oh, and also, the bottom right, a little, but with the stitches running vertically  (top is horizontal).  will finish it this way,  using both directions i think.  Integrated Applique has become my second  (Invisible Baste) favorite stitch technique.

002
the room where things get born:  again, Integrated Applique of the eye (which will get more stitching of lines)  and some changes in the ghost butterfly….straightening, antennae and a thread bead head.   THEN,  a Wind came from the Raven's window yesterday and drifted over and across the Arlee moon.  i cut and wove it under the branch of the ghost tree.    this is now Invisible Basted.  not sure if it needs more.  will wait.   and it's only noon.

hey Els…it IS a uhhh, lumpy cloth. not at all flat.
anywhere. well, i guess in Deb Lacativa’s firmament, but
otherwise, not. and i really like it that way. am going
to begin the three other grasses…that may smooth it some, but probably will just add to it all. the kantha
of the ghost tree was stitched with deliberate tension to
create that. i just love how it happens.
    thanks for coming over……….

This seems SUCH an important teacher-cloth for you, yes? I’m absolutely SMITTEN with the wind under the tree. As you were talking about wanting just to PIN things, I had a flash of those Colorform or felt boards I played with as a kid – creating stories from characters and environments and props. so THEN I had an image of all your bits with velcro on the back, or something sticky, and you just placed them around and moved them around depending on the day… a GIANT felt board/cloth, I like that image.

Grace, these have a wonderful ancient-ness about them. Lumpy is part of its depth of character and like the sand dunes, always changing and casting different sorts of illuminating shadows…a good circumstance…

You posted before noon (Eastern Standard time? no–what time) and now (here at least) it’s warm, damp from 48 hours of rain, with a golden sunset far west if I hang out my front window, otherwise almost dark at 5:30PM. I wonder what your needle got up to this afternoon, or if some other thing occupied you. This morning the cloth with it’s depth and details was such a welcome sight. How I love watching you meditate upon it, and then it’s evolution. Thomas Merton wrote: “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”
gleaned from Karen Wallace–Her excellent post the other day:

I couldn’t get my engines going today. A four page snail mail letter from a friend in Washington State arrived full of news of three days without electricity sitting in the cold. I managed to respond in kind with other news at dawn. The rest of today I was in and out of bed. Sometimes sleep/dream/wake and repeat is all I can manage. No reason. I continue on into the next day with cloth to work upon and no other plan till Sunday.

yes. teacher. but all cloths are. i’m so much just
learning. oh…smitten!!!! beautiful word and yes..
i loved weaving Wind under the branch. it’s so great
to just cut the cloth and weave, even if it’s only that
one single weave. a wonderful feeling.
yeah…felt boards. i actually do something a lot like
that on all my curtains, especially the large window one
in the living room. sometimes i feel like my LIFE is
a felt board and i move myself around in it. ~

Hello Jude, just a passing thought but looking at your work in a mirror gives a strangely different perspective too. I love mirrors.

Elizabeth…you jumbled up the names…it’s me grace, and
i know you know that. i like getting jumbled with Jude,
tho. a mirror. i can imagine that. i took the mirror
that might work for this outside last year. it’s on a
rocking chair, out in the lizards grass place. maybe i’ll
bring it in tomorrow and try. i love mirrors too. my
old other life house had old framed mirrors all over.
and yes…it’s as if they are EYES that catch glimpses
Thank you for this thought and my love to Ballarat.

    Good morning, Grace
My notebook broke down, so I have to rely on my husband’s tiny powerbook…BUT that doesn’t keep me from checking all my favourite sites which obviously include yours.
    The circle is wonderful…love it!!!
I hope to send Jude a picture of my own progress on an eye-sampler – I’ll always end up with “samplers” and small pieces…and ask her to publish it on SEW. Using the typepad-dashboard doesn’t work – I tried often, don’t know which mistake I make..
How big is your actual cloth right now?
    Have a great Sunday,enjoy!!!

    Hi Michelle,
Thank you for the link. I’ve just read it, and as you commented on Karen’s blog, it’s definitely possible to do the exercise without fuss.
I really love your own blog very much – full of similar inspirations.
    Have a great Sunday,

So sorry grace, was hopping around between you to Jude drinking in the beautiful cloths – must have got a bit giddy! Somehow I’m not surprised you have a special mirror outside.
