because of many days like this

i forgot.  because of no time of a certain kind,  i'd dropped some of the thrift shop stuff into the close to completely evaporated indigo vat.  stuff that i would never use in it's original color, but the linen and cotton too good to pass up

if you leave it in there long enough, it actually removes existing dye in some cases. the nature of the beast.

and I was going to say earthy too. The pink now so natural – and lovable.

LO and behold is right!!! Good glory what a difference, wouldn’t even recognize them as the same! I just love the white lines of his inner elbow. My boy used to tan up like this. My friend called him ‘brown bear’ before the book of same name was even popular. I hope this time will forever stay with you both. SO precious.

Mark makers – great grandson in sand, ole Nana with Indigo. Indigo is magic and seems to want to give color, every way it can. I’ve never made a vat, don’t know all that much about indigo but as you know, I did plant the seeds that you sent. In June, I had to go to CA for two months and didn’t think hubby would remember to water the plant so I transplanted it into a large pot and put it where he would see it… When I got back, the plant had grown huge and was beginning to wilt due to the extreme heat here in the South. I noticed lots of blue spots on the leaves and from the scant research that I had done, I knew that it meant color. Stripped all of the leaves, and tried to make a vat but it just didn’t work since I didn’t have the right materials. Not wanting to throw it all out, I took the wet leaves and bundled them up in a cloth and placed the bundle in a glass jar. Left the jar outside for a few days and was thrilled when blue color began to appear. Unbundling, I found unexpected markings, bits and lines of indigo, strong in some places, faint in others, all from just bundling. Since the cloth I bundled had lace butterfly appliques, the markings seemed to be just right for the cloth.

Oh those little hands making their mark!
And the indigo treatment turning mundane to magnificent!
Pink and blue make brown, and the variations are so much fuel for w/winter stitches too. But above it all, that sky, that bluer than blue, blue sky!!!

Hey Grace, just want to reach out and touch those little hands and feet! My nephew has been transferred back to a hospital near home; still having problems but to be expected with major brain injury. It will be a while before they know what will come back and what will not, his wife is wonderful with him and I can only thank the Universe that he has such a person who will be there no matter what. Anyway I hope tp now get down to Spirit Diairies and visiting you regularly again. So lucky to have Julian with you for this time, he will always remember it.

he’s one of the Lucky Ones….a constant state of brown.
interesting that he doesn’t tan darker…the
only difference his mama will notice is that his hair
is Rasta~ing up from lack of tending.

Precious gift, many thanks for indigo powder. Will probably wait to use until spring when weather is warmer, not sure if a vat can get started now even though i am in the South. First frost day should come at the end of the month. First frost night is this coming Sunday. Today, on a stroll down the lane collecting leaves, spotted small walnut windfall; leaves pressed into book for later use, walnuts soaking in my little cauldron that is sitting out on the back stoop. Can never get enough brown this time of year, hickory nuts, acorns, oak leaves, pine needles, tea bags, anything I can get my hands on…

I also work with old cloth, second hand, sometimes found in the street. I like the idea of giving it a second brand new life as if they were starting a new history. have you tried undeying first?

undyeing….no, ????, do you bleach it?? what?
sometimes i can get good fade if i leave it on the

ho! beauty on the line! In my indigo vat recipe (from Glennis and I understand it’s from Dharma Trading), there is thiox, which is sold as ‘color remover’. some of my favorite experiments this summer have been with commercially printed cloth where the thiox stripped out some of the color. I’ll admit, I used the natural crystals for vat one and for vat two, the pre-reduced.
