so i went.   This is the 25th anniversary of the Festival of the Cranes  and today was the annual meeting of the Friends of the Bosque,  the human beings who volunteer time, sweat, money for the love of this Place.  and this is the thing i have been stricken by everytime i have attended a Festival, the sheer almost ecstatic energy that is created by so many who travel so far for this Celebration of Birds.  There is a HUGE aura surrounding the entire refuge during that time in November.  and i mean that literally.  Whether or not you are "into" auras,  it simply is there.  hovering, vibrating, reflecting.

Most of the time i go to the refuge when nothing at all is going on.  it's pretty much empty except for those that work there.  i go to just sit.  and stare.  i take a little lunch and eat it in the weeds somewhere.  somehow this connects me to the birds.  today, being Volunteer Day it was BIZZY.  There was the annual meeting which i'd never attended and which was so full of interesting info about what has been accomplished in the last year and what is hoped to be accomplished in the next year or two…a LOT about management,  research projects (like the one for the cougars that just "showed up" to set up housekeeping, not just pass through.), and i was touched by how much Everyone there, the Fish and Wildlife people, the Federal Wildlife Management people, EVERYONE really and actually LOVES this Place and what it represents to the Planet.  So after the meeting, a really great lunch prepared by people who just love to feed people.  (so New Mexico) and then the various projects.  planting, clearing,  weaving the river willow stick fence (me) and more.  a LOT of people.  a lot of boyscout, girlscout troups, 4Hgroups…kids.   Too many people, after a while, and also it was getting to be Goat Time, so i wandered away.  i said i'd take pics.  and as usual, i didn't.  but i stopped at the edge of the Refuge, at the beginning of the 9 mile trail to Chupadera Peak and climbed up

005

facing North.  and i picked up some flaked pieces of old iron from Railroad doings to wrap in cloth.

and i DID connect with the very great YOUNG woman who is doing the program with the kids from the local, San Antonio, elementary.  i didn't realize this is a very new program.  after her presentation i  went up and told her i was interested in working in this program.  we talked and i have her email to set it up.  as i was walking away, i said…"and are you innundated with volunteers?" to which she cheerily replied, "you're it!".  so.  ok.  how great is this.  she works with the combined 3rd and 4th grade class, so she gets the kids TWO years.  They do a variety of projects.  their teacher works with them on one Thursday in class and then on every other Thursday they spend the day at the Refuge following through.  This year, the Refuge has given them their OWN piece of land.  They will research it thoroughly.  they will record all manner of things through out their 2 years in……….DEB G.!!!!….their own personal notebooks that they are given.  FIELD NOTES.  where they record Data and make maps/diagrams/drawings.  i mentioned that this was what i would really look forward to and that i was good at drawings.  She was happy. said it was her weakness.  one of the things they draw is all the artifacts of prey they find in Owl scat.  oh, tra la.  This is GOOD.  This is very very GOOD.

HAAAAA! Yes, I absolutely love the motto. That it is two years, too, that’s pure sunshine and hope. And that they get the opportunity to produce knowledge, to get used to the idea that they are producers of knowledge. I’m really struck by how important it is for children to become acustomed to thinking of themselves as such, rather than trying to unshackle them from habits of obedience to other people’s knowledge when they are twenty.
And, in a twist on the program’s awesome title, I’d say I’d like all of us to have ‘lots of child left inside’!!!!

This view takes your eye forward…forever! Love that and the changing colors in the distance.
What a super day…and program for you to be involved in. It sounds like it fits like a glove. I will be so interested to hear of your experiences.
There are so many programs coming up that encourage children and nature to connect in new-old ways. Our generation just went outside and played (and more). Now we need to plan the time for it and encourage it.
I did the training for The Outdoor Classroom Project over a year ago. Surprisingly, it’s still hard to get teachers on board!

With pleasure dear one…and, Oh, this connection is the kind of good that’s GREAT! The first video is maybe twenty minutes, and the second a little over an hour. I had such a fine morning watching them…the people there are wonderful, the wildlife inspiring, and wait till you see the petroglyphs toward the end of the second one…like your stitch work. Enjoy.

As many have said and as I have said to you, you are a natural for this and the learning, the sharing, the connection to the children, the land, to you, it really is a full circle gift for all.
When I read of how at different times of the year, you go, sit in the weeds, and feel connected to the birds, I again thought of one of the definitions of the Wild Woman. I sent you this in an email but think it is good to share it here because of the synchronicity of all of this: “She is an idea, feelings, urges and memory…She is the source, the light, the night, the dark and daybreak. She is the smell of good mud, and the back leg of the fox. The birds, which tell us secrets belong to her. She is the voice that says, “This way, this way.”
And through your fingers on paper, as well as the childrens, the way to caring and respecting this Bosque and its winged inhabitants as well as all of the other life forms who dwell there will come to be. To me, that is legacy in action.

Michelle, thanks for putting these links here. This is Marti and I so much enjoyed watching the first video that I wanted to reply. Will watch the 2nd one later in the day. grace has often spoken of the Bosque and one day, I will look forward to seeing it. Here in southeastern TN, we get the migration of Canadian geese and those honking beings flying in formation in the sky, thrill me to no end. One aspect of the first video that grabbed my attention was to finally see salt cedar, certainly beautiful but invasive. I was fascinated to learn that the cranes and snow geese are territorially held in check by the planting of corn, clover and winter wheat.

It is thrilling to read of this most delicious new beginning. Your gifts of observation, imagination and skill in communicating will bless all of the students with whom you will travel as you explore and document your learning together.
The sanctuaries here in Montana are my destination places for a picnic and listening, writing, sketching and taking pictures. Retirement now just a one year old child and I am not ready for volunteering…but will surely thrill to be following your travels with learning, exploring, expanding with the students.
The migratory birds have been filling my days here in my little in-town residence…and the short walk to the Clark Fork gives so many opportunities to watch their behaviors and record with words, poems and sketches. The Sandhills are migrating now, the winds have cleared smokey skies and when I make my trips down the Bitterroot this week your writing about this wonderful new exploration and sharing, growing, giving opportunity has opened my eyes and ears to new places to rest. Off soon to Fort Missoula my first stop on the fall migration path. I am so energized by your words and feel new eyes and sensitivities pushing to the fore as I gather supplies for my outing.
The world of birds, of grasses, of all growing things is now a canvas for creating so much sweetness and gentle learning on the travels with the students. Pure gift from the Universe…glad to be an observer and learner as you share the path.

i wasn’t going to talk about this yet…sometimes what
people Say is not what they DO,
    BUT
a couple is supposed to come tomorrow for 4 of the little
buck goats. this is from a conversation in the grocery
    store line.
THEN because of an ad i put in the local paper (2 times
a week only, the paper) a young woman called. she has
“big” goats”, didn’t know what kind and her little boys
want Little~er goats, more their size. she wants ALL
the rest, which will be 5. i liked her a LOT, talked to
her a looooong time. liked her a LOT. it is perfect
because those 5 are still un banded and my daughter is
incomunicado at the moment. but this young woman said
not an issue. her husband has the tool for calves, pigs and can do it, easy. and so.
    and so.
    and so.
and it hasn’t happened yet. BUT i have faith in stuff
    again about all this.
    and
the Presence “about me” really has nothing to do with me
at all. it is just how it is. it’s What’s There.
i have had all kinds of faith and lost it all and then
circled it in such a wary way
and started making Cloth and trusting Cloth and now, am
watching. listening. looking from a different vantage
    point.
it takes a LifeTime to make friends with some stuff, yes?
    love to you…..and deep Thanks

first, that’s wonderful about the goats. little goats and little boys, perfect. and when they’re gone you can keep touch and i imagine the logistics of herd management will be so much simpler.
understand about losing faith and being “wary.” and yes sometimes it seems to take a lifetime. funny you say that. just recently became friends with a viet nam era trauma. all along i had thought it was something that needed to be removed, purged. turned out it just needed to be integrated–added to the cloth, so to speak, in a harmonious, meaningful way! i see that now. sounds so obvious and simple, but it took all these years. kinda like regaining eyesight.
having said that, still remains your “presence” regardless. the “what is-ness” of grace. yes.

“biophilia” – the idea that we are genetically coded to NEED nature .. .. (too bad it sounds like a disease or perversion). This sounds so wonderful and perfect for you and those are SUCH great ages to be with children outdoors. I used to help run the Earth Day programs at the boys’ elementary school and then got super involved and fundrose and built a new playground with raised beds for Outdoor Classroom activities, cleaned out some neighboring woods of invasives, helped launch a pilot ed program at a local CSA… One thing these kids did in third grade was ‘adopt a tree’ on the school grounds – they drew it, photographed it, journaled about it, collected specimens… it was such a great learning exercise! I can’t wait to hear more!
