this is my Post Office.  it's where i go when something is too big to put in the 16 box Neighborhood Box Unit that is at the end of the road.  how it's done in rural areas where there is no home to home delivery.  i get a little slip in the keyed box that tells me i have a package.  the hours have been cut in half.  sometimes it takes me a while to get there.

Our beauty Full new Postmistress.  when they cut the hours,  Debbie, our forever postmistress went to work in Reserve, NM so she could have full time hours.  and now we have a new person.  i forget her name.  i'll find out and remember this time.  i told her this morning that i'd like to put her picture here so people can see who receives their packages.  you can see, at the back of the pic, bottom right, the shelf where the package waits for me.   and you can see, by her face, how people ARE, here.  Open.  Good.  Glad.   sometimes her daughter comes to work with her.  sometimes her daughter's friend too.  they do stuff outside on the cement infront of the P.O. because it's the only place where there is cement anywhere around.  once, someone brought their kids with pogo sticks because of this.

isn't she just Glowy?????  her name is something like Ikea.  i'll find out for sure.  it's important.

    hey.
doesn’t her face look like the faces you make?…like
    glowey loving moons?
i love young women like this. just my heart fill us with
stuff for them. this is the only job here. the Post
Office is really, all there is to Polvadera. Kind of
the mission church too, i guess, San Lorenzo, with the
letters on the front with a backwards z. that’s it.
i said to her this morning…”so…you can be here
forever” and she said “i hope not” and then smiled that
oh so tender excellent moon smile.
    oh…and eee.

you know, her world is so so small.
here we are, looking at her face…us, US, from all over
    the world and she
    she is there.
in a post office that is probably smaller than most of
Our kitchens. not mine, but, generally.
    most kitchens.
and that is her world. her home, which most likely is
a trailer home, then here to work.
    What to think about that?
I love it here because i came from somewhere else that was
    BIG.
but if this is all you have ever had….?????
    so, i am thinking,
    i hope not too.
    just so she can
    choose.

This post is so valuable. The vast unknown gets real specific and it feels personal. I won’t forget that face…and I hope her name is NOT Ikea-cause that’s a corporate retail business of some note….and I so hope that some opportunity just right for her crosses her path in this lifetime, that she be enabled to actualize all her potential.

some family member. so…they brought them here. to
this little bit of cement to boing around.
    it’s something, isn’t it.

maybe part of the reason she has such a glowy loving moon face is because she isnt from somewhere Big. still, i hope she can go there (Big ) if that is what she would like , i hope she has the choice of it

I wonder why we all seem to want her to go somewhere else. Somewhere big. I think part of a running theme here is how life reveals its bigness to us when we stop wanting to be somewhere else. Still it is a mark of compassion that we wish happiness for her, which is a different wish, don’t you think?

    Hi Grace,
now I have an idea where you post your wonderful cards/letters and also collect those meant for you.
Thank you for this picture – It helps me a lot: when I write a postcard I will have an idea where you’re going to pick it up.

your post office looks like something out of a Georgia O’Keeffe painting! Those same colours, and textures of adobe. Mmmmmm. Lovely. Jan; England; not a Big place really, but big enough for me!

So much about this to love.
    Her open, smiling face
    A small patch of cement
A small as home post office
The ways of bringing your children to work with you
All reminds me of my own similar places
i just came across my photo of this post office, visited some 10 years ago. I always thought I’d like to work there. Someplace small, and green
    http://www.kaweahcommonwealth.com/kaweahcolonyhistory.html
And I had my single parent years when my kids would come to work with me, or I with them…as I worked the desk at my daughter’s dance studio…she’d dance, I’d work and my son would play ‘foil baseball’ in the parking lot with the guys from the pizza place next door.
    All good memories.
And to see your place…your post office is truly meaningful.
