the Propane guy was supposed to deliver early.  and then it moved to before noon.  then it moved to "shortly".  he came at 1:30.  i had to be here because the tank is in the Back Goat yard and i need to let him and his big long hose in through that little gate.  the Goats watched.  closely.  from a distance.

and mostly the day was not great because i began feeding with this Cut of grass hay.  and there's no good point of talking about it, it wouldn't make any sense to anyone who doesn't feed livestock, but just to say, the Goats were startled.  to them it was inedible.  unedible?  both.  they stared.  they milled around.  they stood and Looked Off.   the one thing important to a Goat first thing in the morning is Eating.  and so.  it felt really bad.

so i spent a lot of time on inet reading about hay that's good for Goats and hay that's not.  and why.  and protien content and first, second, and third cut and how they differ.   and i spent a lot of time thinking….did they not eat it because it wasn't what they were used to?  what they had come to expect?  OR because it isn't good for them.  Goats are extremely good, when they can browse, at eating things according to their nutrient value in Season.  what they won't touch in the spring, they love in the Fall.  and vice versa.  so….and anyway, trying to understand about this.  i may need to find another source of feed.  oh sigh.

and all the Propane stuff made me late to my work away which then had to be done during the time of Goats milling and milling by then meant sticking their heads through the fencing around the Oasis to eat the weeds in there and Arctica does get stuck and i was Gone….

so, i did stick pretty much with the now.  but the now wasn't all that great.  but then,  compared to Other Nows,  it was really not much on a scale of 1 to 10, was it.

i took that diamondotgrass on and off too.  made it straight, let it move.  Off, On,  Off, Oh.  I looked a lot at Spirit Cloth.   trying to understand some stuff.

and i thought about planting this garlic.  but i didn't.

Fits and starts; hay not eaten…so what did the goats eat then if they didn’t like this cut of hay? Do you have backup food that you can give them? In astrological terms, and mind you I view that with a somewhat skeptical eye, but I read that this month of October of this year is a rough one for just about everyone…especially dealing with finances and the unexpected…

nothing. i augment the hay with pellets at the evening
    feeding. but, all day, nothing.
    that’s the point.

I’m glad the goats are subdued…now it’s your turn, not subdued but eased. Sometimes with the sheep, I found it helpful to make a hay change by combining half of the old and half of the new…teased them into the switcheroo. Another thought…check for mildew in the hay. I’m happy you liked my earlier note and had hoped it would bring a smile to your face. Good Night from chilly N. CA….will be frost on the riverbar tomorrow a.m.

Something in the stars today maybe… strange and somewhat annoying things on my end, too, but nothing really bad, just got the mood-river flowing and moving dams and eddying in all the wrong spots. Hope it will all have moved swiftly through in the morning – and for you, too!

news from N. CA always so welcome. i am warmed and reassured by it.
    even frost on the riverbar.
Yes…i might have tried that, the mixing of old/new but was nforwarned that the new would be so noticably different. after
the experience last year and now this, i will be prepared in
the future. will begin asking questions and really wanting REAL
answers. there’s no mildew. it’s Clean what it is. so, we’ll
see. Tomorrow is a New Day.
and yes! a smile. and another smile in this moment… love,

was going to offer Judith’s of N. Ca’s suggestion–but now you have it. and then i was thinking of the 3-day phenomenon and perhaps that’s at play here as well.

Oh–I remember many ‘off-the-feed times with cats and dogs. Cats are often picky. It’s always daunting…the mothering tug of animal hearts strung together–the herders search for green pastures.

day 2 today. i called the county extension person and
have a little more info to go on. learning as you go is like this, i remind myself. there are just so many things
at play in it all. over and over mind says “i wouldn’t
have Goats in an environment like this where they can’t
forage and are so totally dependent.” but then…what
good is that? we ARE here. Circumstance gave us this.
so…how do we make the best of it….

not here, but yes. this is the grass that is set aside
to last me till May. most people when they buy feed buy
a trailer load at a time. one hundred/two hundred bales.
and then store it in a pole barn. because of not having
that kind of storage, i get some at a time…9 bales
    at a time.

my daughter’s flatmate’s cat had been staying for a while with a friend and whilst away was fed tinned cat food. on coming back to her usual dry food, she refused to eat for a week, but eventually gave in.
