that is Lucky Star’s first kidding here…her third
kid out…that i thought would be the first loss.
she was barely there. barely able.
and i went out in the morning prepared to bury her
and there she was.
Just going. one weak step after another.
Just Going…her name
and today she is a strapping young doe.
Just is a very vast expanse

yes. i do remember. yes.
i love that you make this connection
do you remember the photograph of a person standing at
the edge of a cliff, arms outstreatched, upstreached???
and the words were, maybe a paraphrase now…
Is this Real?
Is this Real?
This Life that i am living?
that became my mantra

i have looked. backward. forward. four times. i had in my mind a singular person. and then i came upon this–four women. two standing. two squatting. draped in cloth. one with hands extended. in the foreground, a village. in the background, perhaps the foothills of the Himalayas? Kashmir. Henri Cartier Bresson. and the caption:
“to know that what is impenetrable to us really exists, manifesting itself as the highest wisdom and the most radiant beauty…” a. einstein
wondering if this is the image?

The babes and the light of these photos really grab me and speak to me in lovely soft whispers.
This is a good life for you Grace.
I think once again of the book “The Good Earth”.

no…but i remember that one too.
and i realized that i have done this before. the image
and words that i am thinking of were in some kindred
publication and i have somehow merged them.
this has happened maybe 4 times….
i have never been able to find the one i’m thinking of

that first pic…in the blue shirt, my daughter, mother
of this new mother here for that, i love this pic
but also for the Midwife in the foreground. She was
magnificant. this was a Naval Hospital in San Diego.
Granddaughter in the Navy. when i went i didn’t know
what to expect….but it was incredible. they let all of
us stay in the birthing room, my daughter, me, the father,
my granddaughter’s friend. didn’t blink an eye.
and this Midwife. she was truly a Gift from the Universe.
so loving and easy and totally competent. AND when Alyssia delivered the placenta, and i heard her say
ooooo
i commented and she held it up…like a pizza dough all
spread and we, the midwife and i just loved it and she
gave us all a beautiful “lecture” about the Gloriousness of a placenta. i loved her. i wish i had her name to put here. she was a military senior something*, i can’t think
of what you call them, but she was up in the ranks. but
she delivered a baby like she was Ina Gaskin on
The Farm. *Officer
it was humbling. All of it.
