it was a Work Away day.  but before i left i looked at this pile of tree trimmings that has been in front of the Way Back double gate for a year.  i had thought it was a brilliant idea to ask the tree trimming guy to drop off some of the branches for the Goats.   the key word was ….some.   He dropped a whole trailer load.  and they have for the most part Sat there.  first, they might be a fire hazzard.  and  second there were a LOT.  i have asked over the months, various people who come by here in trucks if they or any one they knew might be interested in loading them up and taking them to the landfill.  Nope.  So they have sat.  i realized i would need to do it myself, but it never seemed to rise upward on the Priority List, even tho i have been unable to use that gate all this time.   and even tho i am a fire hazzard worrier.

so i though, OK.  Owen and i could do it.  cool.  but somewhere during the night those words from the Permaculture book arose.  Hugulkultur.  YES!  so before i left this morning, i showed Owen what i was thinking.  showed him the pile.  told him i'd be back y 2:00 at the latest and help.  and Lo and Behold…..

when i arrived home,  here they were.  a WEALTH of Hugulkultur material and out back?…not a single twig.  all raked and perfect.

and then we moved some stuff that i have wanted to move forever.  and we hauled in and stacked pallets in the Buck Pen.  and then we made and ate a spagetti dinner again and talk.  Earnestly and with thought about many things.

and then Owen organized his stuff.  again.  and i did the small things i do in the evening and tomorrow he Sets Out Again.  and i will RePlay it all in my head.

Thanks, Julie.  Thank You so so much.

Dear grace, I have some old wood rotting away and a bit of a fire hazard if I don’t sort it out. Now thanks to you I can hugulculture it! I try and keep all that has grown here in place – composting weeds, prunings etc. so the soil gets better and I’m recycling – but the remnant trunk pieces had me stumped. Thank you!

This is all so hard for me to get my head around…our Owen, there in living color, in your life. But I know that if you truly talked honestly together, you will immediately know what a difference these moments with you will be in his life. Tell him hey for me.

somehow, just when the load seems too much, a door opens and help arrives. It should always be so for you dear Grace…the Vedas say when you have reached your limit entirely and sincerely, grace descends. Perhaps it’s so.

So, just when the load seems too much, a door opens somewhere and friends come. Don’t the Vedas say when you have tried your utmost, and sincerely, that’s when grace descends? Perhaps it’s so.

hurray for hugelkultur, I have stacks of branches and all sorts of garden cuttings etc……and they can now be put to another good use! I am trying to keep the garden going by feeding itself; did I mention David Holmgren’s book has arrived, well it has and it is fascinating, another serendipitous sign: a friend of mine in Ireland is also into this permaculture ethos…..we haven’t seen each other for a few years now, still on the same page though (I have modestly stepped into the world of facebook, hence the reconnection)

I have a big stack of branches that I’m planning on doing the same thing with too. I made a small one several years ago and loved it. I think it was too small to hold much water though.
