it can rest a little while now.   a day or two.  or a few.  just As Is.   Mo made a really thought Full comment yesterday,  that to her the butterfly is a distraction and superfluous.  i like both those words and what they mean here a LOT.   distraction.  superfluous.  and i thought about that a lot.  in a way, it is very true.  but there is something in me that really likes that butterfly made of wind.  and likes it There.   so i went to wikipedia and looked at the word Kitsch.

" a lowbrow style of mass produced art or design using popular or cultural icons.  The term Kitsch is generally reserved for unsubstantial or gaudy works or decoration, or works that are calculated to have popular appeal."

"according to Walter Benjamin, Kitsch is, unlike art, a utilitarian object lacking all critical distance between object and observer, it  "offers instantaneous emotional gratification without intellectual effort, without the requirement of distance, without sublimation."

and i liked very much all this as definition of kitsch.    and it's true.  that the moment i pressed that butterfly to this cloth, the term kitsch~y rose up.

BUT.

i also like it.  i am going to look at it both ways for a while.   and i am also looking in terms of the idea of Theater that Jude mentioned.  i went back back and back in the picasa library to find a cloth that i made, sort of,  at the very beginning of my time as Jude's student.  it was directly about Theater and i went on with that word Theater for a while.  making the curtain in the big west window the theater cloth.  adding things to it,  that created a sense of Theater.   but then, as i was scrolling through Picasa,  i realized how much of what i make is nothing more than that.    In that, they are simply scenes.    that seem to be set.  like a moment in time,  JUST before something happens.  and what the something is, we don't know.  it's just a cloth of that moment, Just before.  and how much i LIKE that.   so…having all this in my head,  i was OutSide today and saw it all repeated Out There.  it's all a scene.  nothing happening in that moment that is obvious,  but it is all Ready.  all in place.  So MANY things MIGHT happen.  or not.  and how much i love that moment.

Theater.  how life is Theater, really.

early this morning i was looking at the Warm Weather Curtain on the door to the Way Back.  thinking about making a cloth loom of it.  do i want to?  or do i love it just as it is?

and right now,  the single Robin,  Robinda,  is speaking.  has not gone on yet.  is remaining longer than usual.

A sunflower theater would have butterflies, birds, maybe even a dragonfly, certainly a lizard staring up. I’ve butterflies on my mind because this morning, Rich called softly to me and said, “go outside to the lilac bush, bring your camera.” I did and what I saw was so beautiful in movement, in color, in an amazing gift of the day kind of way… Before my eyes, a dance of black swallowtails, drinking deeply of the nectar of our lilac bushes. Their vibrant yellow wings, outlined in black, flecked with blue dots and patches of orange against the lush green leaves and the soft lavender of the lilac petals; it felt like an open invitation to spring. Without disturbing them, I was able to get a photo.

Praying mantis eat aphids, so do ladybugs!.
The theater is the moment caught, the moving, ever changing moment caught, like photography. The theater of life and “A;; the word;d’s a stage” (Shakespeare)
O love the butterfly and the independent leaf, and ‘kitch’ is just a part of the critics vocabulary.

our spring is so slow to start this year. . .it’s lovely to see things growing where you are. “kitsch” is not a word I would associate with any of your work, Grace. it may be a perfectly good word, but it doesn’t come up for me here.
I love that you feel free enough to let things float. . .unattached on this cloth. loom and the possibility of being woven in. . .or of just visiting. and the suggestion of butterfly that could transform into anything else.

well….i am thinking about how i learned so long ago about
how ANTS must groom the peony knobs for them to bloom.
Maybe this always happened? and maybe this is the first
time i have been there in that exact moment to see it?
the Praying Mantis are not born yet….ladybugs not in
    profusion yet
this Iris is on it’s own

i am loving ALL of this just so much…all of it that this
    Cloth has brought up….
    it is grand.
loom. the string threads. providing the secure place
for whatever wants to be woven in…either for a moment,
    or long.
    either way.
    it’s Good.

it used to be a screen door. daughter, granddaughter and i
turned it into a strong door…wood on bottom glass on top.
that’s the design element on top frame. interesting,
isn’t it. original door made by Alz B’s ex~husband. as
a lot of the outside chairs here, the Dalai Lama’s
coffee table. there’s a lot of that family here and

I have so many things to say here. but first kitsch. this is so much about the empty use of symbols. this is so much about what I have been drilling down to. symbols. but how they connect directly to us. how that has to be to avoid kitsch. yet common recognizable icons. how do they fit in in some other way. anyway. that’s one thing for now.
except maybe theatre. I think it is a form of context. but maybe more about that later.

i used to think about Theater as a form of context. but
am thinking now of Theater as a symbol that is very
ingrained in my way of experiencing the world and the
cloth i make. Theater is an…uh….Entity. a Phenomenon.
Theater is an Alive Moment. really, a Being.
and butterflies….other iconic energies…i watched this
late afternoon, a simple small white butterfly flit into
my sphere of being…just flit flit flit stopping here, there, somewhere else. a small plain white butterfly.
but it too had gone through the whole EVENT of chrysalis,
of Waiting, of then, Just Going. so frail, it seemed.
but it had withstood the Wind of the last weeks to be here today. it moved, both in its work of just Living and then in the Great Planetary Work of pollenation…no small thing.

    yes. so a Verb, framing
can also be a Noun. the Framing, Framing, an energy.
    and Energy.
different from how we think of things in a lazy way.
    a thinking without thinking.
but this Framing is the Act maybe of an Energetic Force.
    to
    show.
    to tell.
to try to help us Understand
