This morning, as it became Light,  from the view of the Morning Chair,  i saw for the First Time,  the beauty of this pot.   I'd watered the earth in it well and the porous clay of it was saturated.   I'd brought it home last year from one of the places i work.  They'd thrown it out.  It took till now to actually See it.

spent some more time with my feet.

tore out the tile under the bathroom sink…inside the sink cabinet.   It had been giving me the creeps for years.  Done.   Opened up the computer and lo and behold a Whole World of Dust and cat hair and unidentifiables.   Unreal.  Vacuumed and dusted the fans with a stiffish paint brush.

There’s a person in the first photo.
Your feet post of yesterday prompted me to walk barefoot in the school field with the dogs this morning, it made me remember the parts of my life where I never wore shoes. And then of course I come back to read Jude’s post re: the deer tics, which is such a Big Reality here. Sonofabitch.

Oh, Julie, your very last “sentence” made me laugh out loud so hard…direct and to the point. My hubby and I have each removed three ticks from our bodies already…it’s going to be a rough season (now till Nov., if we’re lucky).

julie…i may be totally wrong. but ticks are NOT going
to come on to bare feet.
ticks look for heat. they hop on from brush etc. on to
clothing, then make a beeline to Heat.
i honestly think bare feet would NOT attract a tick.

I am not expecting a very good year for gathering natural dye plants around my home, however, a neighbors hillside spring is still overflowing and running down the roadside which has created an abundance of horsetail. Would anyone like some to throw in their dyepot ?

Happy Mother’s Day, Grace. We keep digging them out to put it no uncertain terms. Our ticks come off the bushes and fall from the trees..it’s crazy. Foot bone connected to the leg bone, leg bone connected to the hip bone, hip bone connected to nice warm spots..and so it goes.

Deer ticks and any tick infected with Lyme, which is MOST of them, are after ‘blood’ that’s all. Feet are not safe, nor clothes. But clothes can be stripped off at the back door, bodies can be inspected and treated. No joke at all Lyme–it can cripple, become systemic and come and go opportunistically once contracted. My rule of thumb–better safe than sorry–even here in NYC parks (but they spray which helps some). This year is a very good one for ticks because the long Winter actually protected them. Pain in the natural ass for sure, but they are part of the natural body of the natural worls–just try to keep them off your body. Picking them off can be tricky too…if they have been there a while and dug in, squeezing them out can force them to release (inject) the juice into you. There is a careful tweezer method that takes some skill. You gotta get the head out first. don’t squeeze the body.

I agree 100 % with every word Michelle has said. Several of our neighbors who homesteaded back in the ’80’s-90’s are now crippled or robbed of their vitality due to Lymes. Sometimes Mother Nature can take all the fun out of things..maybe it’s an attempt towards balance of species ?!

loving this pot–what an archaeological score–and your pants–what is that word on the lower left leg?
and this is an interesting thread re: ticks. i know lyme’s is horrible. have only known one person who had it and she’s no longer walking the earth. i’ve also picked more ticks off my body than you would ever imagine. even remember my 1st one–summer of 1971. pregnant. you would have thought i was in the jaws of a hideous flesh eating humongous creature. funny how familiarity changes things.
this sounds gross i know but in WV i had a jar full of kerosene and daily i would add engorged ticks from my dogs. until it was time for a sacrificial fire. i don’t like ticks. i would almost say i hate ticks. do not understand their function in the chain of life.
so no, i’m not trying to be cavalier. not in the least. but honestly, i’ve pulled ticks out of my hair, off my clothes, can feel them walking around on my skin way before they hunker down–but never ever have i had one on my bare feet. on socks. yes. but not on bare feet.
the thing is, i don’t walk through deep grass barefooted. i do garden shoeless.
and as i linked yesterday, there are tremendous benefits to going w/o sole protection.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgwF0tpioTU
this being said i just googled tick removal to find that my tried and true method of removal doesn’t work. could have fooled me.
i was brought up to always screw the tick off counterclockwise under the theory that they burrow in clockwise. slowly. i unscrew them slowly. but according to google info–tweezers and alcohol are the way to go.
i guess we just gotta do what feels right for our own selves, right? same shoe doesn’t fit every foot.

sorry, but one more thought. wood ticks and deer ticks are two different creatures, right? maybe wrong. and arent’ deer ticks the carriers of lymes? i’ve never had a deer tick to my knowledge and understand they’re quite a bit smaller than my familiar wood tick antagonist.

when my son was 6 he came in the house with 2 deer ticks on his bare feet. I only know what I have lived. In this neck of the woods they even advise enclosed shoes. Especially a year like this one.

Deer ticks are a whole other animal…I wouldnt even mind the regular ticks, Lord knows the dogs make regular deposits onto the bed. I just pick them off no problem. Deer ticks are about the size of a pinpoint and Im just a very vigilant person. Many manh people here sick w chronic
    lymes.

Well, ticks spread disease, which at least is a purpose in the Grand Scheme. What function do stinK bugs serve, that’s the question.

yes, deer ticks are really a problem in your neck of the woods–not so much here, so that makes a huge difference. really, though, for me the question is how to reap the advantages of going barefoot on the earth–while avoiding the dangers of ticks, snakes (now that’s one that encouraged me to keep my boots on), etc.

We aren’t supposed to have ticks in this area. For the first time (about 2 weeks ago) we had a child go home from the school I work at with a deer tick. I wouldn’t be surprised that this will be a growing problem for our area…

    don’t like ticks, carrier of Lyme’s, I know several people whose lives have been badly affected by the consequences of un/misdiagnosed symptoms…having said that, they are here whether we care for them or not, be careful Grace (please) check and remove by twisting with a special pair of tweezers (we have two pairs, bought them for our dog who attracted them like nothing I have seen before!) if after a week or so you see a red circle around the bite you know you have been infected and a treatment with anti-biotics should prevent the disease from nestling in your system, and now doctor’s advice is over;
love the crusty pot and non-crusty feet;-)
