It started out good.   Lots of Personal sniffing,  tails wagging,  tentative friendliness.   Then it deteriorated a little with Chinche spending a large portion of the day in the bathroom sleeping.  Actually,  she normally does that.    It was 100 degrees today.  Bathroom is the coolest place.  But today…for a different reason and not coming out as much.

She growls and snaps at attention.   And new dog, T,  backs off.  But always tries again later.  Am thinking it will get better.  Chinche has Never known Play.  When she came here she had been a road dog.   They are not of playfull spirit,  but rather,  very serious dogs.  She is a very serious dog.  T is a very Trying dog.  She just Tries everything.  If it works, good.  If it doesn't, well, maybe later.  She has a good attitude.

she is deep into Learning.  She is deep into knowing Every Single Thing here.  Every Single Thing.  She is memorizing Every Single Thing.    It's really something to see.

i was a little startled when Jan brought out this crate.  I have never thought about using a crate with a dog or anything,  ever.  But she is heavy about crates.    She says it avoids a lot of unnecessary grief for a dog.  I'd brought it home yesterday and set it up this morning.  It changed the decor of the Living Room.  It's right next to the door.

I'd read an article in NY Times a while ago about changes in how Day Cares are working with kids and one of the things that stuck in my mind was the establishment of Breathing Stars.  A large Star is created on the floor,  off to the side some,  and when there is a moment of Stress of any kind,  the child is asked if they would like to go to the Breathing Star.  Where they sit.  no comotion at the Breathing Star.  so they can sit there.  Center themselves for as long as is needed.  And i watched T use her crate this way off and on off and on off and on  all day she would go into her Breathing Star Crate and just lied down.  or,  even just sit a minute.  As i write this now,  in the Dark,  she is all curled into sleep.  Door is open.  It's her space.  So i look at that.    I'll close her door tonight, after this so maybe the cat Tazmeena can learn that she can go in and out,  no worry.  Tazmeena spent the day sleeping on one of the Cloth shelves in the bedroom.  She has great worry.

Doe Goats were Startled!   she goes around,  doing her memorization work which includes their gate,  but really,  is no more interested in them than any blade of grass,  any small stick of wood,  any piece of the Earth.  And maybe this is the VERY BEST THING.  It's all the same to her.  Just Stuff she needs to Learn.  THIS,  THIS is quite Beauty Full.  and the real Blessing of it all.

She visited the buck pen a couple times and when i was changing their water early and at first,  they jumped back!…snorting…stomping their feet…but she stood at the fence and they came,  they touched noses….Taking eachother in through scent and it was just O K .

So…Day One.  and Really,  it couldn't have gone better.  Last night, in the middle of the night i woke and thought  oh, Jeez.  What have i done??????????   But again…it could not be better.  She is Happy and Willing and Curious and well,  just so absolutely perfectly Great.  Dogs.  Dogs are amazing Beings.   Tonight i look to my left and she is sleeping gently in her Breating Star Crate.  Totally WILLING to find all the ways to FIT here.

so…i am feeling incredibly Lucky.  She will make her way and she will memorize the land,  she will run the peripheries over and over.  She will Claim it,  Claim Us and be Our Dog.

Though her vet papers say she is an Australian Shepard Cross,  if you google Catahoula,  that is much more what she is like.

and maybe Best,  i was able to work on this.

beautiful dog. I crated my Mirrhi from a little pup, she’s a cross breed of 3 working dogs and would herd the cats all night if left to it…and even now at 2 yrs old, loves her crate…..carries her toys in at night, brings them out all through the day, naps in there, the cats climb in with her. It works. they do find their place soon enough. happy for you, dogs are great…..says she who knows that middle of the night feeling “what have I done”…..the answer now is a very good thing.

T, at first glance, reminded me of a wolf…her unusual markings reminded me of a living dyed cloth, her eyes are magick. Will you keep T for her name?
It’s all here in this latest cloth: the colors of the land, the heat, the stormy days, the clear skies, it looks to me looks like controlled chaos, the colors juxtaposed with the sharp edges of the pieces but it is the deconstructed weave that I love, those threads, strings, flying about, radiating all over the place…life is like that when we add a new element to the mix of our life.

A good start…I can tell that you and T are attaching. Your cloth could be a breathing star. I can see its respiration.

the pictures tell so much about T. feels like a good move. and i think crates give some dogs the sense of being swaddled. held. safe

She is, whatever name you will call her, simply beauuuutiful. Love her eyes, her curiosity, her willingness to touch the goats noses without growling…she is a good dog. The crate for her own space is the best way, in my opinion, to bring any dog into a home…mine have always loved their crates for night sleeps, for rests, just for them, a place of their own. Good to be working on this cloth..so much expression of the day to day changes…fully coming alive with the present life as bits are being added….So love seeing all the explorations of your new girl…her curiosity radiates from each photo….a great post today, Grace.

it is really a Chance, isn’t it. I think easier if it’s
    a puppy. But i also didn’t want a puppy….not willing
to expend all that kind of energy. am better suited
    for this age….10 months….
the Crate is really a phenomenon. am trying to just take
all my own thoughts/feelings out of it and really see
    it as she does.

this is a great response to the cloth…helps me see it
as it is…thank you for that…
she’s wolf like in her bones and in keeping her head
    low when moving…and it’s a kind of lope ing…doesn’t
walk. and yes…she is the color of your Winter Cloth.
i started saying the mis of her name very softly and
emphasis on the T….have i said they named her Misty?
but half way through the day, just the T. and maybe
that will be it? i dont know. just not Misty.

i think with her it means that everything is OK. When
she doesn’t understand things, she goes there, seemingly
to think. There are no questions in the crate. no
decisions. i like it best when she just sits for seconds
and then whips back out to try something else.

T is indeed beautiful and I think a very good fit for you. Bringing a new friend into the mix does always take time and work, doesn’t it? Briar had never been an “only” as she was raised with three cats, but Lola was something very different for her to get used to. I bought a crate for Briar because I had read about all the pluses. She barely used it as she was rarely left by herself and always wanted to be close to us. But then she was abandoned in a box with her sisters and brothers. I don’t think she’s every grown out of a neediness that I have never seen in Lola. I have used the crate way more for baby chicks. Never even considered it for Lola. But Lola does have her hidey-hole cave that is in a closet that she retreats to when she is stressed. I love the phrase “breathing star.” We call them calm down spots, but breathing star sounds much better.

She is a beauty…and I think a good match. A friend had a cattle dog, years back. Very faithful and once you started the fetch game…he would not let you stop!!
Here’s the article. Very interesting. I likr the idea of a breathing star…and also see it in your cloth.
    This line really caught me:
“Before he had no friends because other kids were scared of him. Now he’s got three friends.”

for me too, the crate was hard to take on,but I read a lot and if done right….not locking puppy in all day….is good. Also a safety thing, I could put her in and leave her safely while I went out for a brief time, or had things to do in the yard when I couldn’t watch her. And safety for my belongings and electrical cords and slippers. But I spent time with her, moved my sewing machine and laptop to the kitchen and there we stayed for 6 weeks maybe, during her rest and nap times, until I let her into the lounge room. So I guess she associated crate with me there busy beside her and a good thing. Your Miss T is already crate trained, so it’s not an issue for her. I considered an older dog, but wanted a dog who was safe with my chickens, not untrain other unwanted behaviours, which I think can take more energy. You are getting used to each other, it will become easy soon enough.

Django has a crate too; Tungsten was my first dog and we had the same crate for him, just for the first couple of weeks, it helps them settle into the new home and especially when they’re small and sleep lots, it’s their own space. One is not allowed to disturb them there…our boys are now old enough to understand of course, but younger children and some adults too have to be told: when he’s in his crate, best to leave him alone. The crate is temporary in our case, it’s in a corner in the kitchen.
We also have a couch in the living room, one I made for Tungsten, big enough for a grown dog to be able to stretch himself or curl up on. It’s off the floor just that little bit, so he can be above the draught; dogs sometimes like the draught, other times they don’t, Django has options (as did Tungsten)
I like the look of this new dog of yours, time will tell how you all adjust to each other. What does the T stand for?
