Don't know how this will be, enlarged,  as in Clicked and Double Clicked…but Mo had asked for a Map.

It was Work Away day but when i got home,  i studied the situation with the New Corridor a while, dragged away the roll of excess fencing,  cleared the space.   And then   came in and made this Map.  It's really not spacially correct,  but close enough to get the drift.

What's happening is that New Corridor at the top….with the yellowie gold color.  As it is,  the Way Back is not connected.   But when the new fencing is up,  i will cut a space in the wood of the Way Back Fence…OR, really,  just take out 3 or 4 vertical fence slats…and then Goats can make  their way though that corridor,  which goes through the west end of the House Yard…OVER and THRU two raised bed there….on into the Middle Pen.  I'll cut the fencing there for the opening.    This gives them Free Access to the Way Back and the Middle Pen and also one side of the Albatros,  the BIG shed/barn like thing…and this is the Point….that they can go there for a DRY space during these rains which are forcasted to go through the whole month this year.  At this point, i think i will close off the corrider behind  the Albatros to the back doe pen.  Not sure why.  and maybe i won't, actually,   but am thinking of keeping that far back doe area closed.  Maybe for breeding.  ?????

So the guy from the lumber yard delivered the cattle panels,  3 of them.   Even with the Old Cowboy's big PickUp,  too much would hang out.  Could make a Hoop of them in the back of the truck but that would have been up to me to do…they don't do that,  and i am too short and skinny to maneuver the 16ft panels and tie down in the truck.  Oh, well,  so they delivered.   Originally,  Paul who does Everything had said he'd pick them up for me with his Flatbed,  but as he  is still incomunicado….                                                                                                                                                                    So they, the panels,  are here.  We'll see in the morning.  Maybe i can drag them over myself.  Don't know till i try.   But if i can't i'll call the Guy Who Stays Forever and ask him if he can come over for an hour or so.    Will make that CLEAR,  an hour or so.   All i need is to get them some in place.  Then i can wire them myself.

loved studying this–and noting the way “form follows function.” this seems like the natural, organic way to design space. what is needed? how will it work in relationship to the whole? How can it be achieved?
when we lived on the farm in WV, a very basic conflict–which was never quite resolved between me and man–was this: he thought we should plan everything out and construct it BEFORE we did anything. i thought we should conform space as the need presented itself–in the moment so to speak. different approaches. i like yours!

oh the map is such a gift! (thank you for thinking of it, Mo). I had some things oriented completely wrong, and never quite got that there was a front and a back…

Oh this helps. A while back I even went to google satellite to try get a better sense of your place. Got a sense of the vastness all around but not detailed layout like this. When we were getting ready to build our house we read a fantastic book called A Pattern Language. It was about using design in a way that made sense for you. Very much about flow and what works for you rather than how things are traditionally done.

yes. if you have to hear about it all the time, it’s
probably a good thing to be able to visualize a little
    clearer.

Thanks for the map. I always love to see your place. The more we see the more of a shape it has. Like it’s formingout of a bunch of small images into a whole little homestead. I’m so impressed with the things you’ve done there.

I have been trying to envision this for myself. Not so well I can see now. What is it about all those desert vistas that made me think you have acres and acres of space. And I always wondered about the need to section and cordon off spaces.

i couldn’t have imagined what all would work in the beginning. this is the only way i can do it. But if i would need to do it again, somewhere else, i would know more

No, i have an acre. One acre. I am surrounded on two sides by a LOT of space, acres and acres. But me, here, one.
the need to section off is because i still want garden space to grow food. still want some trees and bushes. still.
GOATS do what goats do, which is Browse and if i didn’t cordon things off, everything would be EATEN.
also, it necessary to keep the bucks and the does seperate. That too.
I wish i lived somewhere that i could just “turn them out” and there would be acres for them to cruise in. They would not eat things down to the nub in acres and acres. They would select things to eat according to season and everything would live then. But i don’t. it’s a sadness.
    all this cordoning off

Need is good, mother of invention and all that. But it’s beautiful and interesting too. Form following function is always pleasing, like Jude says.

Ah, a map! A treasure indeed, so I am glad Mo asked. I love a map, you know 🙂
I think what amazed me most was that you use all of your land and I had pictured things closer together or in different places than they are. I had picture some used, some empty. Like the oasis, the dye table and the clothesline…I had them much nearer together in my mind.
    This is wonderful. New perspective.
