the cucumbers were a bust this year.  But i found/find self still remembering the making of the bread and butter pickles.  This was a yearly ritual with my mother and her sister.  It's one of the very few memories of my childhood that had good meaning.   The making of them and then THEM themselves.  They are the Absolute Best.   So…no cucumbers.  but then,  in thinking about it i realized that it was the onions that i loved, too.  How i would be yelled at,  well, not yelled at,  but scolded for picking out the onions.

SO.  Today i made bread and butter Onions.  Same recipe.  Just missing the cucumbers.  We'll see.  We'll see if they are

Satisfying.

The four small jars are with red onions.  The quart jar with white onions….not sealed,  but to rest and "pickle" in the refrigerater for a reasonable time.  I use the juice in many other things,  BarB Q sauce,  coleslaw.   The juice is elegant.

you will need to double click this to see it.  I was trying to drill a hole to screw in the I hook for some bells that have been lying on the floor of the porch.  Drill   drill but no and i brought a chair out so i was higher and at that point one of those

Wasps bizzed around and Lo and Behold….LOOK.   This is the front PORCH ceiling under which i pass a zillion times a day every day and there they are

And how i never knew it.  How they had been such reasonable YardMates all summer.  ???????

a stump of the Yerba Mansa.  We'll see.

last leaves for now of it…Yerba Mansa…even if nothing happens dye wise…just this is Enough.

Long and really GOOD conversation with granddaughter.  How it sometimes is,  that we skip a generation to find kindred spirit.  This…well,  intense.  and Speaking to the Now here and i am a lot without words in the moment but it's all spilling in,  to some kind of Soup and it's fragrant and full of nutrition for the Life.

i’m still using mom’s recipe that was granma d’s for bread and butter pickles. i’ve also got a snoot full of the vinegar and spices while canning these. wheww eeee talk about breath taking.
i also will peeled, hard boiled eggs and place them in the pickling juice. refrigerate and let absorb juice for 3-4 days. thin sliced radishes are good too.

Joy of Cooking recipe for me except i never have that many cucumbers so it’s a guideline. Allspice berries make them so good. My mid 70’s edition says to double the onions if you like them. I end up with as many onions as cukes.
Joan, the eggs in the pickle juice sound like heaven. I bet they would make wonderful egg salad sandwiches.

Bread and butter pickle sandwiches with cream cheese was a favorite up in Massachusetts with friends. Maybe cucumbers are available somewhere, meanwhile the onions should be swell enough to keep those taste buds cheery, and they just plain LOOK pretty…and that jar of Mansa is a work of art.
That ‘family’ connection is precious. No other food like it.

My mother’s recipe is always a little shocking because you don’t
process after they are in jars. so they are really really crunchy.

My mom used to do this with hard boiled eggs and pickled beet juice. I didn’t much like to eat them but OH the color of those eggs…

quietly present is very good, too. but i’ve been thinking that
i have been boring lately, but really, can’t do anything to
“spice” it up…it just is what it is…am working at being at
    peace with boring.

Not boring! It’s just that sometimes by the time I read post and comments there is really nothing that needs to be added. If we were all sitting in a circle you would know I was present in this way–smiling, nodding, eye contact, body language. How does a quiet, visually oriented person convey that to a blogger without words.

the boring part was not to do with your quiet attending, but
rather me to me. You are FINE. i always know i can come
to your place too…find you there. so…not in reference to
    your quiet watching,
just me about me to me.
    We’re Good.

So true with me as well..every day I read and find so much of good thoughts and ideas posted…and I am filled and so often just take it all in and in stillness move along for the day.
Pickling is so much delight. This year to pickled beets, dilly beans, dill pickles and chow chow, bread and butter, always a favorite (good thing we were not competing for onions as children, Grace -mmm delicious)…so I added some spicy picked carrots…grew some good ones, they have onions and garlic from the garden…pepper crop not so great so got those at the Farmer’s Market…now I wait two weeks for a taste test.. so much wonderful garden produce to enjoy throughout the winter.
Purple pickled hard boiled eggs..need to try that, for sure.
    Much love
