How i spend TIME with the Old Cowboy today, cleaning his house and going through his paperwork and shopping for hotdogs and paper plates and the as seen on TV picker upper thing and a new bath mat and how i Understand that the SUBJECT now, is

Death.

No getting around it. Here we are. Death. Ok.

and how i understood as i drove home that it's an all new ballgame. This is what we are doing now, me and him. Such odd companions. But here we are, because i guess he Called me those 20 years ago and i showed up…showed up, not knowing what showing up might entail. Not wanting any of that, but here i am. All he's got. Here i am. OK.

Ram Dass, Be Here Now how it was all so just OUT THERE at one point and somehow over time passing has become HERE. be HERE now.

Amazing.

I came back this morning to comment on the beautiful buddings that began this post about conscious dying. Life returning…It reminded me of Francesca Freemantle’s introduction to ‘the Tibetan Book of the Dead’: “The book is not based on death as such, but on a completely different concept of death.” Its whole point is “the fundamental principle of birth and death recurring constantly in this life.” ‘Wherever there is birth, there is death, and wherever there is death, there is birth. The book describes not only the process of dissolution, but also the process of coming into being, and these two processes are continually at work in every moment of life. it’s the center of his attention right now. the “when i’m gone”
thoughts.
Sometimes when he just keeps it up, I begin singing the old
Roy Rogers and Dale Evans song to him…Happy Trails….
but yesterday i knew it’s time to begin being more uhhhh, being
more, ummmm, useful. And listening closely and creatively
to what is useful to him…specifically. How does He want
all this to go.

He hasn’t done his homework. And it’s going to be a bumpy ride. This you know. But what a gift Grace. I’m humbled by your willingness to do this.
My mother wandered through her house for years before she died putting little pieces of masking tape on all her precious Things with her children’s names on them. When I’m gone. When I am gone. When you are gone you are not going to control anything anymore and that is a very hard thing for some people.

well…he hasn’t done his homework because really, he didn’t
INNOCENTLY know there was homework to DO. He is a very very
basic and plain person raised up by very basic and plain people in a very basic and plain environment.
in a certain way, he is SHINING THROUGH it all. So we’ve got
WORK to do…me and him
