this goes back to Easter day.  Alz B's son Bill called….he was "in the neighborhood",  "could he stop by?"  I always know when he says these words that he  has something in mind that he knows i might not be enthused about.  And so it was true again.  He brought this.    He has his thoughts.  That differ from mine.  He wanted me to cut the Giant Sacaton clump grasses.  I tell him i can't.  He continues to think i should.  And so it goes.   So he brought this Best weed whacker and a helmet with ear things which i have since returned.  But he was persistent that i try it out.  "Just this once" to see the difference.  So…being me i was unable to say NO! and i did it.

What was maybe 6 or even 7 foot tall dried grasses …..fell….to the enormous noise of the blades.

and i worked again.   Three legs was really good.  But once you noticed that it was only three,  there was an uneasyness.  so…..i moved the 4th leg.  Over and over.  Over and over.  I think this is ok.  It's amazing how subtle this is.  To keep the Tension of the Dog's stance.  Just the smallest change could change everything…. I think it is ok now.

This is what the screen is for.  I got it maybe 12 years ago for the Old Cowboy because he has 2 TVs going constantly and for some reason the TV in the diningroom was interfering with the TV in the living room.   It got resolved eventually,  but the screen that had been the intermediary has been folded up against the wall all this time.  Now…it might work for This.  That Art Event in Magdalena,  ….the fiber arts will be exhibited in the High  Country Lodge.  Everyone is responsible for their own display.  Maybe this will work.

the new cottonwood leaves….i don't think you can see it here…but they are kind of waxy and they Glisten,  sparkle in the Suns Light like diamonds.  Both trees have Taken.  This year they will GROW.

There was just something about seeing the screen that called to me to hang cloth although I thought of it more as a place to put up a few scraps, get some ideas. Now your idea of using it in Magdalena is a terrific idea. It makes a great backdrop to show case your cloths. Wondering if the lodge will have enough light or will you need to rig some kind of spotlight to shine down on the cloths? They all look so compelling and make you want to get up close to see what story presents.

the High Country Lodge is an Old hotel and restaurant that is not now a hotel or restaurant. Just a place. A building. This is a
very Loosly organized event. Will just put it As Is. What i am
mainly interested in is the contact with who ever else will show up…different fiber artists…and then, of course, anyone who comes by. It is similar to the time at the Opera House Flea Market at Santa Fe. It’s a wonderful opportunity to watch people look at what you make. Watch their faces. Talk to them. Weave in that thread.

Screen is perfect. Once I hung a clothesline to exhibit some pillow cases. Used wooden clothespins. I hung three lines across a three paneled screen tacking them to each of the outer frames and there was room for a lot of art. On the back of the screen I tacked paper art.

Explain more about the grasses…was this pruning the dead foliage for fire safety or for better new growth? Just curious why it caught Bill’s attention? Signed, Puzzled in PA

Don and I go back and forth about cutting or not cutting tall grasses. We just read recently that cutting the non-natives once a year after they go to seed and before they let those seeds go is a good way to prevent propagation. But so far we haven’t cut back our little bluestem and it seems to be spreading. So … I guess it depends on what you want to accomplish.
We did experiment with some bunch grass this spring … cut back one and left two to see which way is better. The good news is that the really good grasses have such incredible root systems that I don’t think cutting them back does any harm.
But no question about the screen and your trip to Magdalena … it looks perfect. Can’t wait to see pictures!! And to hear what inspirations you give and take from being together with like-minded makers.

Giant Sacaton. These are clump grasses. and these three are
HUGE clumps, many years old now. The density of the clump
is startling. impenetrable, really. He had cut them down
once before about 6 years ago maybe, 7? They have some over
at his place that they cut back every spring. Cutting them back
allows Sun to get in…otherwise, the dried blades and stalks
remain, year unto year. In this spot they are protected from
wind by the corner area of the fence.
My question about them is always What happens in the Wild? How
do they care for themselves on their own? Maybe old clumps eventually just die out….? I got the original 2 from over in
the Bosque. they were very small. A third took hold and then
there is a newer younger one a little ways away.
So i guess the answer to your question is tho, to encourage
    continual growth?
When i was thinking about this, i googled images, Giant Sacaton
and one of them was exactly what i was seeing out my window…
Garden of Edith garden-of-edith.com. She’s in Nevada. I left
a comment but it’s still waiting moderation…maybe she knows
    more?
Bill is very much in love with Native Grasses, knows a lot.
So, i will watch what happens. In the last few years, there
hasn’t been much Green going on. Just SOME amidst the dried.
    We’ll see.

i wouldn’t cut any, but maybe these. They are GIANT clumps.
the bluestem…no, i agree…leave it. Plus, you have deer.
i think the screen will be ok. and really, the underlying
motivation for connecting with people is to talk about
GOATS to as many people as i can. Sometimes fiber people are
Goat people or know Goat people. This is something i really
    need to do.

yes…i had a different three paneled screen before…i don’t know
what happened to it. it was wider and heavier…actually made
for the purpose of displaying wool skeins. I used it when i
was displaying the fiber figures and gourds.
This really takes me back to those old days. it’s nice.

I know what you’re talking about. Being around other artists….watching…talking…it is very exciting. I have entered a quilt into a quilt show this weekend. I have only entered a few times and always the best part is just standing close by and seeing and hearing people’s comments. Love your selection of pieces and agree that the 4th let added mush to the piece. And yes…..I want to add that I’m really happy you got the pictures back on line.
