and every day is Earth Day,  but still…on my calender,  just like Christmas and Easter and Passover,  it says Earth Day.  Tomorrow i will do Tonglen.

and a little while ago,  Mo reminded me of the Living Shrines of Uyghur China….as a way to keep Tay out of planted areas…

i won't do the small fences.  But looking,  i thought about how she completely does not "see" the Raft,  all the things on it…as something for her too.  She goes all around it.  dragging sticks,  her antlers all around but not there.  Ever.

IMG_2878f

so i threw a lot of these sticks over the fence from the Way Back.  There's a big pile of them…coyote sticks for fence making,  but maybe i'll see if they will indicate some kind of boundry for her.  spread them farther apart than this and plant at the base of the sticks and maybe inside their circle?

IMG_2880f

and some to shore up this trellis that fell apart this winter.  The cucumbers will need to go here this year.   They had always been where the Migratory Corridor is now.

IMG_2869f

was gone a lot of the day to Old Cowboy's so not much left by the time i got back.  Printed this and drew a line with pencil to get a feeling of it

IMG_2891f

and i began.  a very thin, single strand of the variegated  blue and ivory…pale….barely there.  Don't know if it will show up here, even with double click.  Think i like it.

Just to see how it might go.  Have 10 days Max to be ready.

Thank you for sharing the living shrines…they are so inspiring. I hope your stick tents will signal Not Here effectively to Tay. The cloth is so lovely. I like the spiral and I especially like the free threads holding each evanescent bit into the wind. The screen works well for display.

the screen…yes. it will work well enough.
the book…it is stunning. There are some things about her work on UTube
I don’t want to go too many places at all, but i WOULD go there…wander
there, would need to be years of wandering there
i hope the sticks work too…i want it to be good for both of us. She didn’t arrive till June last year and the plants were all big…she went around them. Now, when i put them in in maybe a week or so, they will be very very small still. I will set some up tomorrow and then watch, see how it goes. more Crossed Fingers.

Tomorrow – Earth Day: I’ve held back some of my seedlings (tomato, peppers and squash) to wait for tomorrow, to put my hands in the earth, to plant and to give thanks by using words and I will think of my beloved Dad, who taught me how to do this.
Robin Wall Kimmerer, whose book, Braiding Sweet Grass, I read some time ago speaks to this need of giving words to the earth:
“Stories are among the most potent tools for restoring the land as well as our relationship to the land. We need to understand the old stories that live in a place and begin to create new ones for we are storymakers, not just storytellers…stories are connected, new ones woven from the threads of old…”
“Many indigenous people share the understanding that we are endowed with a particular gift. We may not have wings or leaves but we humans have words. Language is our gift and our responsibility. I’ve come to think of writing as an act of reciprocity with the living land.”

from my little book “Rituals” by Michael Davis. The invocation for storytelling
    A good story
    Tells itself
    And in the telling
    Magic is set free
    In me enchantment
    Has a home.
A new story of planting in the earth with Tay close by you…she will know, she will understand.

it will be ok won’t it. …the screen thing…. and really, don’t know of what might have been better in this particular place…
so it’s ok. and i am really really beginning to look forward to
watching people’s response to them. talking and listening. it’s
been a long long time since that.
    the sticks. we’ll see. Tomorrow.
    love to you

i think so. she is well, she is
interesting, her responses to things. I dumped the pickup full of grape vines out this morning, near the Doe’s middle space and before i left, i told her to leave them alone. When i came back, the pile was as it was, but first thing she did was go get a single vine and bring it. She has an Interesting Mind.

The teepee thingy would work best I think if you have enough sticks and twine for the top – besides, it would look GREAT. That new cloth is a sweet wonder and everything on the screen is gorgeous gorgeous. don’t forget, you might also tack on the other side as well, and clamp lights would be great but sunlight would be even better. I’m excited (ha) – AND – METEOR SHOWER ENDS EARTH DAY THIS YEAR!!! The best time to catch the shower is between about 11 pm on April 22nd and sunrise on April 23rd, in any timezone in the northern hemisphere.

The sticks….would it work to weave some twigs and or grasses around the bottom just to give a visual border…the shrine that I love…. is a bit off the ground. Oh and the butterfly beauty…BEAUTIFUL..so much movement…my eyes are dancing! Happy Earth Day…..although very cold and glummy outside I will bring in a few daffodils…earths gifts! So blessed…..

yes the screen will be perfect in it’s own way, a natural background for your work. it could even be set in angles depending on the space you get so if you wanted to show more pieces people could walk around it to view both sides.
I so enjoyed the pics of decorated sticks, a few years ago we built a teepee of large branches in our yard, each season it looked so different, it was fun to see it from the windows. if Tay can’t easily fit between the branches she may just leave things alone. I love that dog Tay.
    love to you

i don’t have any more Cloths. I am so slow.
yes…these kinds of things, how they become so much a part
of It All, changing with season…i can picture this
she can fit, and so can Chinche. but i hope they will see
this new configuration as Designated Space
I love that dog Tay too. She is just the best.

& thank you for sharing the book. these shrines came up when the tree fell at school- symbolizing everything. I will look for it.
