Great Storm,  now softening .  I watched the old dead Russian Olive Out Back and i accept.  It needs some of the heavy branches removed.  They wavered and creaked…are weakening.  They could easily fall and hurt the Goats.  So it goes.

and this.  One side stitched.  a Pocket,  an Envelope.  I kept it as plain as possible,  to allow the Cloth to speak in all the beauty FULL ways it does with such subtle marks and shadows.  Ok.    It's Good.

I have company in the storm.  Picked up Old Cowboy today in his new manifestation inside this funny,  as in quirky little kind of veloure (sp)  pouch.  He's on the dining  room table which is really never used for dining but just where all the small cloth scraps and thread reside.  It's been a week.  Does he still linger?  Is he lingering as i write  this?  Hovering?  Watching?  and i think about how it might have been so much better if he had come here,  to where i live,  for those final times.  How i could have gone in and out,  continued my own life while tending to his.  How Tay could have come to his hand and loved him as she would have.  How he could have listened to the Goats and the Storms.

In my own Envelope/Pocket that i made a couple weeks ago,  on small pieces of paper,  i am writing thoughts as they come…just small sentences.  Like,  i would like to be able to see leaves of trees.  I would like to hear the Goats if we still have them.  Feel Tay.

kind of like love letters.  One sentence love letters

How about stitching the bag with OCB’ness?

i didn’t think of that. It’s such a cheezy gesture. The cardboard box
and the pouch are somewhere around $3oo.oo. Stephen Jenkinson talks of
this when he refers to the Death Trade.

I’ve made several linen bags for ashes over the years … the first one requested by a friend who wanted her dad’s ashes wrapped in something soft made by loving hands, by someone who knew him. She sealed it with duct tape, because that’s what he used to fix everything.

The cloth is simply beautiful. It’s VERY good. I really like the idea of the small pieces of paper into the pocket. This touches my heart.

I wonder would he have liked the beautiful velure pouch. The color is so alive. As for whether he is present within…well, he is present in your thoughts, so yes, and those are his ashes after all. Are they yours now? Do you have to send them to relatives? Can you scatter some to the four winds? I asked for some of my moms ashes and even got the blessing of a Catholic priest, but the real Catholic relatives were horrified, and my brother was in charge, so she got buried in a box instead.
    Lizard is simply perfect.

yesterday i was in the post office. an employee from a local funeral home was mailing out items which were yet to be packed. urns. yep. the ceramic urns were set out on the island where customers fill out forms etc. sitting right there. and then as i watched he wrapped them in bubble wrap and stuffed them in boxes. it was surreal. there was a long line of customers but no one else seemed interested. my jaw was hanging–tried to take a pic stealthily but failed completely. it was all so over the top.
and then i come here and there sits OCB, surrounded by cloth nests. what a soft landing.

no…he is just waiting here till his long friend Blake, the
executor of his will arrives next Monday. He comes from Kansas.
The long talked of plan is that Blake will put his ashes in
a Prince Albert tobacco can and when he next goes back to
Colorado to visit…probably Spring…he will take them in
the can and a friend of both of them that has a plane will
fly them up into the mountains where OCB and Blake used to
ride with pack horses for an annual very loved fishing trip.
From the plane the ashes will be scattered over the small
lake, onto the lily pads, for the trout.
There has been a framed photograph of this lake on OCB’s wall
since i’ve known him. This plan has been repeated many many
    many years.
I won’t keep any of the ashes. Have a feeling about keeping
    them intact.

when I worked at the Botanic Gardens sometimes the hallowed ashes of a loved one would be carefully laid out in a garden bed to be left undisturbed for a few seasons allowing the wind rain and hot sun to integrate them back into the ground.

    the Co~incidence is interesting.
twice i had to wait in the Arrangements Room at the Funeral
Home while paperwork was getting done. The periphery of
the room which is large, is lined with caskets and various
kinds of containers/urns. Also examples of grave stones.
“something for everyone”…including small pendants that can
have the imprint of the loved ones fingerprint.
I think about how other cultures care for their dead

On our island there is a large city park with a little beach. There are several beaches, actually, but this one is not visible from the road, and when you are on it you can’t see any evidence of houses or people, except whatever boats might be in the vicinity. We scattered the ashes of Mike’s mom along the waterline of that beach one very early February morning. Two bald eagles swooped overhead as the sun rose. I have since learned that many people have used that beach for that purpose over the years. Now we call it Funeral Beach.
