i say Cloth itself makes decisions,  makes

moves

presents its Self

Moves.

Jude,  for whom i hold the Highest Esteme,  says she disagrees,  but i too,  disagree.

Cloth Presents and Moves.

This is a really Great Cloth for thinking about this….how it began with nothing but that face that kept being present and prominent on the table and then got laid upon a cloth with two very neutral scraps.  And for a long time, that was IT.   But then,  All the rest of this began to happen.  Do I DO IT?  How does this work?   DO I  envision something and then make it happen?

With this perfect example,  NO.  None of this is something i envisioned.  I simply put stuff.  I put stuff that Shows UP.

So,  What Is It?

I don't know and it really doesn't matter.  It's how it goes.

DSCN0231ff

and how it goes,  i took that 20 minute nap and woke,  there,  next to the table,  infront of the futon couch,  and sat up and looked at the cloth there and then down and noticed the scrap on the floor.

Pick it up and put it There….and it changes everything,  changes the Whole Story which i don't even know yet

This cloth flows, it has movement and maybe that is due to the way the layers are placed, there is a fluidity here. I spent time looking in your shop, the cloths that have sold, await a home, that have been gifted. This one feels different and I don’t know why, just does to me. The little scrap that landed on one side of her head, that fluttering piece, adds to the fluid sense. Maybe it tells me that we need to be flexible, bend like the willow but know that we are standing on layers that may shift at times but also hold firm when it is most necessary…

maybe cloth talks & we choose whether or not to listen, or better yet, a conversation. this one holds bursting energy.

I can only speak for myself, but the cloths that make themselves seem to be better than the ones I plan out in advance.
In the same way, I love watching your cloths develop over time. The crow is absolutely fascinating in this one!

This one seems new and fresh because of the blue.
Sometimes as it seems to me, things seem to build themselves because we are less attentive to notice the in between moments which make the process more clear. that is, how we have glued those moments together with intention. sometimes as if in a coma. So I still disagree.

and amazing how a couple of small bits of fabric bring such a change, I like them here! they kind of echo the dye spots on the right

It’s always the scrap on the floor that talks the loudest. Demands to dance with the others, lead the dance!

I am loving the way this cloth is growing and going. I think cloth presents itself sometimes, I don’t plan very much and why was that scrap on the floor if it wasn’t trying to grab your attention.

i know what you are saying…and yes, this is how it was
with the face and the two neutral squares, yes…
but then there is the Other Thing that happens and about
that, i too still disagree. No sense of coma there…
startlingly clear…and so much better than my own ability
    or imagination.

The coalescence of idea, action and material into a coherent “thing” is always sort of magical. I definitely feel that my tablecloths take on their own character as they come into being, sometimes quite different from what I thought they would be. Like Liz says, its usually a good thing when it happens. This cloth has its own spirit for sure, but it had to happen through you.
