what does this look like?   That 70 person making her way

Terri Windling wrote on Dec. 4th blog post about Elizabeth Gilbert's new book….Big Magic.  She really likes it.  Elizabeth Gilbert of Eat PrayLove  which i never read,  but how she talks about Big Magic….well….

she writes about the poet Jack Gilbert,  how he told his students  "they must live their most creative lives as a means of fighting back against the ruthless furnace of this world"  creative meaning Making.  Making absolutely anything and everything…Making.  Making what's in you to Make.  ok.

ruthless furness and i thought from those two words about the Gmail News that i have.  I thought how so many have TV,  Television…what a funny word,  sounding archaic,  Television,  but TV,  maybe flat screen,  TV in their HOME,  how it might be to have TV in my home and i recoil……..how it must be to have the  flashing images of Stuff happening which really IS a ruthless furnace….to have that thing visually in my Home…i would be insane.  I would become pulp.

so thinking

i light the fire

keep adding till it's HOT.  Cat on the bed,  waiting.  And finally,  i let go of this day and go lie down between the sheets,  under the covers,  i think about the Loving Kindness,  Metta meditation,  May i be safe.

safe.  fire is burning and will go into the hours of the night,  will burn out before morning but still those moments small in comparison when it's cold and i relight the fire and it burns again into a new day.

How Crazy this world is.  How Crazy this country is,  this country where i live…crazy crazy  stupid but so ok…it's the time i live in.  So i build my fire.  I make stuff.  ok.

There are TV channels that are just burning fires. Go figure.
I am home now. And thank you, Grace, for the candles. Tonight there are three (two nights, one doing the lighting).

Today was muddled through and then a return to the writing group which has dwindled from 12 to our current 4. The prompt from Haruki Murakami; “Inside our heads–at least that’s where I imagine it–there’s a little room where we store these memories. A room like stacks in this library. And to understand the workings of our heart we have to keep on making new reference cards. We have to dust things off every once in awhile, let in fresh air, change the water in the flower vases. In other words, you’ll live forever in your own private library.” We have ten minutes…I write”
My very own dream space–skates and skating eights around the rink, that parakeet surprise, the sand in my shoes and the smell of the ocean, the taste of salt water taffy, the endless cloud shapes becoming animals, the animals who curled into nooks and crannies of my life. All there/here in the folds of my brain just a synapse away–a spark ignites a reference like the phone ringing, like the sting of a bee might just be the key to open that vault and bring the whole catalog out for review: Suddenly it’s 1968. A door opens into a room suffused with the scent of Patchouli.
I am lighting my fires when I write…defending myself against the furnace of the world which burns on with or without me….and I look at your night cradle, your fire, your beasties and feel warmed.

stars & a moon for the seventy person to be with…lots of love for that & your mother night blue.
I read “Big Magic”, appreciated her ideas of being with & owning your creativity & that it’s work, too, we have responsibility in the tending of it.

beautiful cloth grace. . .working with 70. . . . .I am working with rejecting nothing these days. . . . .that includes TV. we have it yet are very selective. because there are stories there which weave with our own. . .and because it is so very hard to imagine the things we hear about. . .because we work to understand where so much of the confusion and chaos comes from. and because we can turn it off. as well.

yes Jan that’s how I feel as well re TV. We have a small one and I watch our PBS channels because I am an anglophile and no one does drama like the British plus I watch news as well. We don’t have any cable channels so PBS is invaluable: PBS News Hour, Democracy Now, BBC America, New Mexico in Focus, etc. are all important to me especially when I want to go beyond what I read on the internet. It is my window also into the political, economic and cultural happenings of New Mexico.

I agree with you on PBS and BBC America. . .we do have cable news but I mostly listen to the GPS program on Sunday morning. . .Fareed Zakaria does a concise view of the week and assembles more balanced panels of people, as well as individuals, to discuss or shed light on things. thanks for sharing.

    and candles…yes i know…..
    have a blessed Hanukkah.
My children’s father’s father’s father was Max Zimmerblum. Well
they gave him the Zimmerblum when he came through Ellis Island.
I had the opportunity a few times of sitting with him back when
i was just a teen ager, the Girlfriend of his grandson, and he told me stories of making his way across Europe….from Latvia.
Making his way to New York City and finding Jenny Fox who my
daughter is named for. How so beauty full and oh just everything she was to him. How so beauty full and everything his life in New York City was. He was small and had brilliant
sparkling eyes. Max. I wanted to name my son Max. It didn’t happen. instead we named my son’s cat Max.
I have a candle lit here…just one….for all of Us, all our
deep traditions that strengthen the Web.
Again, i am happy you are Home…LOVE to you

back in the day when i went to them….nothing is ever quite
how Grand i hope it will be…
but i’m glad you liked it and will ask, but pretty sure our
library won’t have it so might order it to read and then share

think I was wanting More, especially looking at the size & price, so again, glad for the library. I think it felt like a long talk, which was fine, just wanted it to go further. giving it to a younger soul, granddaughter, is a very fine idea. I think I would have felt fuller way back when.

I think you know where to focus your energy. . .what is right for you. I keep thinking we’ll give it up. . .we talk about it, my son and I. . .but there are so many things we turn to it for that it doesn’t seem right to do for us. . .the other part of it is that I sort of dream the images so it helps to know where it’s happening. . .it slows down what I dream and helps to order it, love
