to avoid posting about something that MIGHT happen,  that i HOPE might happen,  that i WANt to happen.  Instead,  report on the days events, occurances…WHEN they are happening or Have happened.

There is a better way to say this,  but oh well….

For example.  Last eve at Feed Time,  i was late,  i was SHOCKED.  There was little Jack Flash…the whole side of his face,  down his nose and onto his throat,  covered with Red Red RED congealing BLOOD.

Dog Trainer Jan had banded his horn buds.  It's one of a few ways to deal with horns.  She'd never done it this way before.  It was partially successful.  One of his horn tips Did wither and fall off about a month ago,  but still leaving about an inch of vital stump.  The second horn,  the band had scooted upward and only the top half of the horn was withering….but it seemed that it might be ok enough.  A Wait and See.  The only other thing to do would be to totally re-band both,  close to the skull and by this age,  it would take much longer and the possibility of success diminished.

Goats,  male and female all have horns.  Goats,  male and female all have scent glands at the base of their horns or where their horns might have been.  They are forever rubbing their heads on Things, Each Other,  and here, ME.  To mark.  To Claim.  To Say….I am Me.

Something happened for Jack Flash.  It was close to dark and he wouldn't let me near him.  Nothing to do but wait.

So i came in.  wrote the post and following my own Rule,  didn't talk about it.  He would either be Dead in the morning,  all weakened so i could help him, maybe,  or just Fine ish.  I woke often in the night.

This morning i dreaded going out.  But as luck would have it,  he was Fine ish and somehow had even rubbed off all that Blood.

my heart just Fell to see him that way….i would never have
imagined that much blood from a partially dried up horn…and
how i guess we imagine horns as being like fingernails or hooves or something but they are not at all.
and how much i learn as i go. Now, i know much more. I’ll
need my next lifetime to be with Goats so i can put it all to
    use from the beginning…

I wonder why goats have to be dehorned in the USA, goats need their horns, they are sensitive, they use them for so many things and besides they make good handles in those moments when you need to shake them out of a “mood”!

they don’t. have to be dehorned in the US….it’s still a choice. I follow what i know from my daughter and really that’s from the fact that her Goats, these Goats, are registered dairy goats. If she were still here and this herd was hers, the way she would go forward with the Herd is to take it to various venues for “judging”. Like local New Mexico Nigerian Dwarf stuff and then to the State Fair. For these things, they must be dehorned. also, when having a milking herd….no horns makes it safer to milk…no pokes in the face, eyes. No horns also means no one getting stuck in fencing which can mean death if no one is there in time. So this stuff.
Arctica is the only doe here with natural horns. Initially, she did get caught in the fencing around the Back Oasis. If i’d not been around to cut her out, she most likely would have died. But she seems also to have learned and knock on wood, no longer sticks her head through…??????
When her brother Buckwheat was still here, he too having natural horns, it was an issue, because when around other Goats he would do all the usual Goat stuff but with great IMPACT because of his oh so excellent horns. He is the one that slammed Gideon to the ground. It’s their nature. But he disabled Gideon permanently. In the wild, Gideon, the OLD buck would have died, Buckwheat taking OVER as herd sire, not letting him come to the feed.
so it’s like the Lama at Jewel Heart Temple taught….
Everything has a front and a back.
The bigger the front, the bigger the back.

as best he can, beloved Gideon, he Enjoys life still. I love him so much…
Being present…there’s just so much that presents as WANTING
which turns out to change so fast or remain as Maybe….or
really isn’t actually necessary….so i learn to live with what IS, what Shows UP and it’s Good this way
that child…i have such gratitude for doing what needed to be done so he can become himself
