all the water was dried up in the pot and i took out the crisping leaves for some reason,  not sure what i had in mind but there among them was a piece of muslin

DSCN2036f

i remembered stuffing it in at the end of the bundling effort…just wadding it up and stuffing it under all the rest.

So this is wadding and stuffing.  I like it.  I like it as well as the bundled.   I am not much of a dyer.  Some of you are.

this,  for instance,  from Maria.   THIS is what i would like to be able to make.   I don't know how.

First Desert Willow Bloom

DSCN2032f

DSCN2030f

Chatalpa.   a cross of Desert Willow and Catalpa.    Why would someone want to do this?,  cross them?  i have no idea.  But i planted it here.   That year,  maybe 4 years ago when it  got so so Cold,  it looked totally dead.   But then,  it began again,  the following spring.  I don't ask it to be a tree,  but let it be a bush instead and today it's covered with potential blooms.  Tomorrow i will give it a long long looong slow slow slow slooooow drip of water.  Deep drip.  Slow.  Long.

I continue to think about the post of yesterday.   I feel inept at even speaking about it all,  and i feel too that i need to say something.  To say nothing isn't right.

I read a lot today including a Newsweek opinion entitled:  Why Republicans will Hold Their  Noses and Vote Trump

Did i learn anything?  i don't know.

I talked to my daughter.  She was on her phone at the baby resale shop buying a Wet Suit for Fate because they are going to the River tomorrow and the water,  which is run off from the mountains there is very cold.  It's very CLEAN but it's very cold and he's still little,  but they want him in the River.   And i think as i do,  my most uhhhh,  most……well,  uhhh,  my most

constant

question,

why don't i just GO there?    It's where everyone else is.   Is it not the Place i might be of Use?

I want to put here and now that I so appreciate how you pose the questions, quote from book passages that matter to you and as a reader of your blog, I feel not only an obligation but more importantly, a privilege, to sort out my thoughts and comment on what you present to us. So as a result, I was so caught up in offering thoughts and attempting to answer the questions that you posed in your last two posts that I didn’t say anything about your dyed cloths:
You are a DYER, plain and simple: The mere doing of it defines this, it is like answering a call. The taking out of pieces of plain cloth and then the bundling of leaves, picking the particular pot, adding water, heating via the sun, the wadding of cloth at the last minute, settling into the waiting to see what develops. It all is a journey of discovery and for me, it is the lifeblood of what I do with cloth. Process is the path that leads to the alchemy of dyeing. In turn, it is the alchemy of sun, water, plant materials and other items, elements of pots that change cloth, that gifts us with markings, color maps, veins of story. Your cloths, so beautifully hanging on your clothes line, kissed by the sun, dancing in the wind, these cloths of yours are the mother lode of story possibilities, wondrous, rich and inciting to cloth lust!

You are so not alone in your wanting to be in two places that both hold your heart…more like breaking it. Are you still able to look forward to having the little ones visit this summer?? Having just spent time visiting with family I know first hand how much comfort time together fills the heart with overwhelming pure joy.
Grace looking at the pictures from today…..the flowers…your dyed cloth….pure joy!!

You can never be all the places you want to be, so it comes down to choosing where your heart will be happiest most often.

I agree with Marti, you are a dyer and the exciting thing about dyeing is the not knowing until the cloth is dry and washed. I love this piece, it has so much in it, an ariel view of mountains and valleys, river deltas. Strange flying beings in the bottom half. Whatever you see in it I am sure will be wonderful.

    Catalpa……..such a lovely flower.
I only know it from the catalpa
tree with huge leaves. I’ll see them again next week and bring some to print with.
Your print is very special without leaves.!

I love Liz’s response . . . I think she’s absolutely right that you be where your heart will be happiest most often. You seem to have a deep contentment where you are, a bit like me where I am yet part of me wants to be elsewhere. It’s a question for the heart and a wait for its answer.

well, i am a dyer, yes, in the same way that Every One of Us
    is a dyer.
But some, and you are one, have a specific gift and probably
more than that even, a great LOVE of that process.
I do love it, but not in that same way.

    to the
    Go There?” question?
i don’t go there because i don’t want to. I want to be HERE.
Will i go there?, even though i don’t want to?, maybe.
I am the me that i am. that is deeply rooted in this Place and deeply Loves this Place and deeply loves a solitary life and deeply loves SILENCE.
i am also a mother of a daughter, a grandmother, an Old Nana
to Ones where it is BIZZY and LOUD because of the nature of how things are.
there isn’t an answer right now. I have given myself a year.
But i Entertain the thoughts about it all the time…they
wander around with me every day, those thoughts, have become like little entities, and i hope that someday they will gather together and we will sit down, like i sit with the Goats, and how it sometimes can be, i will find out that the decision has made its Self and i can just catch up with that…
do you have any thoughts about this???? I would very much enjoy thoughts….

it’s still up in the air, the kids coming. There are
other demands for them…in Michigan and then otherwise,
so maybe yes maybe no. For me, either is good. I am not
    NEEDing them to come.
it’s how i am…i don’t need the physical presence of
people to love them. But as Alyssia said….”i want the kids
to know you”…well, for the kids, that requires presence.
I am STILL looking for someone who might housesit/Goat sit
and Tay and i could drive to CA for some days.

they are amazing, aren’t they…they are to me like
    orchids, trees of orchids….
and the Desert Willow is NATIVE….native…!!!! Naturally
occuring!…isn’t that amazing? and one of those things
that i would use as proof to my kids when they were little
that though we don’t have GOD
we DO have the intimation of SomeThing of Supreme Intelligence
that just Loves Beauty…otherwise…why???? Why this blooming
    of such Elegance?

these trees, the D willow and the X bred Chatalpa has slim
leaves in keeping with their exposure to SUN….i’ve forgotten
the scientific reasoning for that…i’ll bump into it again and
can write about it here, but a brilliant evolutionary adjustment to Place and Need
I am thinking of you surrounded by Catalpa…Love Love to
    you Martine
