The first tea, the second tea, the third tea.
The calmness, the nature, the air, the no TV.
The toad, the bugs, the boots, the goats
The lean to, the nana, the OLD nan, the quiet
all of these beautiful memories will give the children
    their soul
    they are so lucky. xo

you know, it’s hard to know. Memories are peculiar to each
Rememberer…i really have no clue how this is going.
Really, they are mostly making do. Except for the Goats.
There is real attachment there, real Pleasure for them.
Last eve, Julian’s father called him from where he lives in
New Jersey and Julian, who is the most NOT phone person, carried
the phone around with the speaker phone on, to introduce his
dad to all the Goats, let the Goats say Hi.
at one point his dad asked if he was having a really good time
and Julian in his consistent way, thought a while and then
    responded…”medium”.

as i’ve gone about the Morning, i’ve kept thinking this
    thread.
They live in Chico, California. a college town. that has
rivers running through it. Attend a really great Montessori
School that has it’s own working garden where the children
are the gardners and there is a chef who creates lunches from
the harvest of the children’s hands.
they live near their Nana, and now their Uncle Jeff and his
baby Fate. There is often someone to take them to places and
    events.
there are 3 large Farmer’s Markets in town, the streets
closed off on market days, with puppet people on stilts,
    unicycles. Activities.
Julian has a dog that he loves very much. Is MISSING, a lot.
he sent her an email yesterday.
the Quiet here. yes. the Quiet. i wonder if and or how
    they register that.

    Not to worry !
Don’t you have memories some where back deep inside of grand parents and the ‘different – ness’ of their homes and ways of life and that when you actually experienced them as a child might have been uncomfortable, but have given your life TIME its sign posts and solid ground.
My mother’s grandparents were English and everything in their home was dark and Victorian. There was a sun- porch where we were supposed to go with our cokes and sometimes my mother and her mother would come out to as well and chat. it was really hot and boring – but I love to remember the hot cracked leather of that bench we kids sat on and the women’s voices.
My father’s mother spoke Finn and we went to see her on Christmas eve and I had to sit on her little lap (because she was so round) and she called me YUDY…and hugged me and she had so much food and a lot of neighbours that we didn’t know came for christmas eve as well and many of them spoke Finn. It was very colourful and sensual and uncomfortable, but the memories of those Christmas eves ground me even today.
Even if what you are providing for these little souls is uncomfortable at the time – the memory of it will ground them for life. xo

love the image of Julian walking ’round introducing his dad to the goats. I remember one of my grandmothers wrinkling up her face and reciting poetry. seeing honey and red cabbage for the first time (yes!) in her pantry and fridge. and, being bored. Tho we were never there long enough to get insufferably bored. which is too bad. not getting to know your nanas.

Sometimes, as we sit quietly I say to one or other of my grandhearts, “When you are an old woman you’ll remember this,” and they smile at the thought.

My Nana didn’t have a home, per say, for us to go to…so she came to ours. One of my favorite memories is her sitting on our couch reading her newest Erma Bombeck book and laughing til she cried.
This time of connecting will always be there on some level.
