this advice came from somewhere.  a dream?  a moment of too fast?  but it's good advice and i followed it today.

so…the new Buck Yard.  so small, really,  but i didn't know what else to do.  Next to it here is the stick pile that was supposed to be temporary,  was supposed to be broken into pieces for the Hugel Culture.  and wasn't.  and now is a home for who knows how many sentient beings.  it's the place where i believe the Great Plains Skink lives.  so….putting off disturbing it.  Now particularly because everything in there is hunkered down for the cold months.  but maybe not even in Spring?  Depends on the need and we can't know till we find out.

it's 32 ft X 8ft,  this yard which is really more of a pen,  a word that is uncomfortable to me,  Pen.

I'd imagined for SunnyRay,  but when it got finished,  there was an ache in me and i knew i couldn't do it.  Lots of Goats live in small spaces but there is an ache.   So…i'll bring the Old Man Gideon over here and put SunnyRay in where he used to live but now with the young wether Jack Flash.   Another unknown…how they will do together…..   Gideon pretty much gets up in the morning to walk to the feed tub and has breakfast.  He spends the rest of the day resting in the SUN  until dinner when he gets up again for that.  There is some "playfulness" with Jack Flash sometimes.  I'm not sure how much Gideon ever wants or initiates and how much is Jack Flash's youth.    But i'm thinking it might be just ok for Gideon here.  He will get more contact,  like a peanut a day and i will be more inclined to make up for Goat companionship by going in with him and brushing him which he loves.  And he will have a new and GOOD view of the Doe Goats across the way.

these pallets will be added on the OutSide of the yard…the fencing will need to be cut.  I'll fill it with straw for bedding and put a tarp over it.  Will be warm and dry.

there is a runway for Tay between this new yard and the outside fence.  I think too about how i am reducing the size of her world with this.  What it might mean to her.

I went two places today.  One to Michelle's….mscomfortzone.blogspot.com or just click her name in a comment…easiest….   At her place i saw her windowsill.  Her windowsill was great comfort to me and gentle and an image of how it is for those of us that live on this Grand Planet.  Comfort.

and then to Ruit Farm Web Journal…ruitfarm.wordpress.com   the other link that Nanette had sent me.  Nina there,  and her Other,  had traveled to the northkingdom of Vermont and brought home 4 new does to their herd.  Ruit Farm is on the coast of MAINE…! ….MAINE….if we can imagine that,  Goats on the coast of MAINE….but yes and they are

all bred.

so for those of us who long for the amazement and joy of newborn things,  February.  She had already bred  her home does with her Buck Reddog.    Baby Goats.  so i am watching.  HOW do people deal with it all?  I watch.  What will she do.  Who will stay?  Who will go and go, how.   And this comforts me.  How we live comforts me.

I had a bank glich in which I was to be charged 34$ for an overdraft that was paid on November 20th (thank goodness because it was to takingroot.com in Vermont for some lovely pain salve which I got and love). So I went in person and spoke to the bank manager and it was forgiven (YAY) and the day was cold, the streets full of drunken Santas already at 2PM so I retreated back to my comfort zone. Now I’m visiting you first and one or two others at nearly 9PM. The long shadows of you and Tay together on golden grasses is a Super image–she’s looking up at you in the shadow and back at you in the full frame–layers of reality.

Michelle…even all this. Even needing to go in person, IN
PERSON to be forgiven on the cold day with drunken Santas at
    2pm
even this. Somehow i am finding it comforting and some kind
of EASE as i go deeper in it all, the thing of Human, the
    thing of this dying planet
those long shadows…aren’t they so BeautyFULL and she looks up
    she always is looking up
    the layers

maybe Gideon could come inside your house this winter & warm his old bones in front of the stove on the really cold days?

It sounds like you are arranging things well for your goaties, Grace. I like your opening words, go slow, as that is what I am trying to do these days. Being retired definitely helps me get a better handle on things, not rushing to work, rushing home, rushing to make dinner, rushing to get to sleep, and then lying awake in the middle of the night worrying about whatever I have forgotten.
And so it goes. We will see how the goat thing works out. I love my Lamanchas, but the Guernseys are an almost Zen goat. They think about things. They are very present. And it gives my soul ease to spend time with them. That’s about all I can hope for in this world, I think!

I love seeing what you are building here. Love hearing about the decisions you make and why, seeing how it all fits together.
I wonder how a fence made of pallets would work. I would like to try that some day. I love the color of wood. Natural.

pallets are what i would build a house of. there’s a lot
about building with pallets on UTube.
there’s a place on the way home from town on the back road
that was raising something, don’t know what, for a while and
they built a very Large fence design with them. I’ll try
to take a pic soon and put it here.
