today is my son's birth day.  Same as the Dalai Lama's.  But he is on vacation trout fishing,  fly fishing,  in Creed Colorado.  So this day was spent with long.  long.  conversations with the female children i have spawned.  both of them.  one on the heels of the other.

the first was with Alyssia and we talked about specifics of getting Electric run on that Hill,  preferably Solar but being told it will cost $20,000.  and well…no point here,  the details,  but the conversation drifted to how difficult it is to create a really very Simple Life,  and how willing we might be to understand what simple might mean.  and somehow the Naomi Klein book came into it and she said maybe its time Gramz…you might like  Parable of the Sowers.  She is a voracious reader.

i don't much like science fiction.  I tried reading Dune and read some,  because it was the thing to do,  but i didn't like it.  it's Scarey.  i don't like scarey or violent.  The closest i have gotten to dystopian is the movie The Postman with Kevin Kostner and then  Blade Runner.  For whatever reason,  they were ok and i could watch them.  But Alyssia is right.  Today,  this president of this United States is "over There,  with the rest of the world,  or a part of it and he is saying things that are unbelievable to me.

and things that will CHANGE things.

Those cats,  under the house.  For them,  it is already a dystopian world.  Always has been.  The bummer is that i have named them,  without trying,  without thought, really.   Leona,  Wheat and Spider.   the mother,  Rainbow.

What a mess,  that.

and i forgot to say,  which was part of the whole point…when they were there,  on that Hill,  yesterday,   there was a

Crow

a simple life is often not as simple as we imagine it. maybe we confuse simple and easy sometimes.
I name all the strays around here.
    I hope you have woodpeckers.

I loved Parable of the Sower. But then I loved Dune. And Starhawk’s The Fifth Sacred Thing. Perhaps it is the hope that survivors of the awful can bring. I do read fiction in that time between wake and sleep, it helps me shut off my day brain.

Some scary things are bearable but some are not. I’ve just started reading Fahrenheit 451, it’s so well written and I agree that there needs to be some hope in human nature otherwise it’s irredeemably bleak.

I woke up in a full night sweat after reading the first chapter of “No is not enough” the corporate coup is real, the hollow men have taken control of the biggest economy in the world and it is going to be a very hard time for our beautiful broken world planet until we all divest from fossil fuels…

For sometime now my cats have been a big reminder to me to keep things simple…it’s one of the things I love about them. They really aren’t complicated at all. Take naps, eat only what you are hungry for right then, be ok being by yourself, let someone know when they are too close, run away from danger and always, always trust your instincts. Now if I could just remember what comes naturally to them. They also remind me to not worry about the things I can’t change, but to say my piece if I feel the need, and recognize others are doing what they need to for themselves even if it seems crazy to me.
About living simply…solar is a pretty new and expensive and fairly complicated source of electricity. Simple is using candles.

Parable of the Sower was an accidental find for me and I so loved it (also not a huge fan of sci-fi or dystopian stories)… it seemed so ‘near’. And, Naomi Klein is one of my new heros — it’s tough to hear what she has to say, but worse to avoid it.
