they work,  They work with the rented Auger,  drilling holes for fence posts.  Under the shallow earth here,  there is granite.  The auger cannot do granite.    Those holes that meet granite early,  need to be chipped with shovel and sometimes a pick axe.  Its slow going.

there was hope, because of aesthetics,  of no fence.    To leave it free.   But there are those wolf/dogs that at some point we will need to deal with head on.  But for time being,  a fence.  To ensure that we have met our own end.  Ok.  Compromise.

The "stroller" ….an all terraine vehicle, me and Emrie,  from a gift from Martine.   You can load Everything in it,  including a baby.

me and Emrie,  we study grass.  we study all manner of things that weave into the earth here,  native grass, dominant,  but others also.  We look,  touch,  admire.  Love…..

When we bought our house here in Maine- the next neighbor had a wolf hybrid. No looking them directly in the eyes. No reaching out to touch them. They are always the wolf to strangers.
His name was Duke. He protected his master/owner. He was a beautiful animal. But he wasn’t a dog.

no. they are not dogs. I had a wolf hybrid, such a romantic image, wolf/dog. His name was Winter Sky at Twilight. Sky. I loved him and he loved me. But he would scale an 8 ft chain link fence and run horses. He went to a native man who worked for Fish and Game.

I’ve barred through rock to put in fence posts, that’s really hard yakka, could only do two in one day at the most, more often just the one, it takes time but necessary to protect the herd. Your beautiful posts exploring The Hill are feeding dreams of going bush again one day…

You and Emrie live this quote by Rachel Carson:
“If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement, and mystery of the world we live in.”

The idea of you and Emrie discovering the wonders of this new world together is so beautiful.
I read about this book project that Jackie Morris is involved in, and thought of you:

Oxford U. Press Jr. dictionary is culling nature words because they aren’t deemed relevant for 7 to 9 year olds. How can acorn not be a relevant word?

Oh my! What I learn about here!! Thank you for this link, I must get this book! And I thought dictionaries should have words you may need to look up if you aren’t familiar with them, so if they are not even IN your dictionary, well that makes no sense!

This life that you’re immersed in right now…a tribute to the dreams of our children…and a just reward for your years of ‘just going.’ I do have to say that granite can be a back breaker, and probably because of my age and experience with the rocky soil of WV I have to ask—are there day laborers that could help with this dauntless chore?
And Little Buddha child Emrie! Oh , Grace! What dreams you must be having.
(And finally, I have to ask…are there chiggers in California?)

I daydreamed a garden that follows that fence. Tall flowers, sunflowers, hollyhock. No one would bother them, dogs on the far side and dog-wary goats on the near side. Fantasy?

that stroller…it’s a jogging stroller, will work for
a long time…many things. It’s big and strong and doesn’t tilt on the Hill or the uneven land. Your gift to Emrie arrived just when Alyssia saw it on Craigs List…do you
have Craigs List there?, anyway, recycled things…so
with what she had, was able to have it. We love it
    every day.

they had already done this for all the Goat Forests, so
by now are old hands at it. Again, there was such hope
to not fence this part. Interestingly enough, no…there are no workers, like men outside the Home Depot or Tractor Supply. Nope.
so far, no chiggers, or any california version thereof. There ARE ticks. But as in N Mex seem only interested in dogs. Not Goats either which is a relief. There also IS
the Poison Oak…but that limits itself to dappled areas and you just look before you touch…

    Dearest Grace,
as i came home last night from a Reiki course i read your words ((martine with the bees) i had to cry, very long and very hard. So its only today i can write you back. That eveningcourse Reiki was very special. We where 18 people sitting in a circle at first with one empty stool. The leader Josh said, we cannot have an empty stool but i imagine there is one extra person? And i said yes, David came with me, because i felt him nearby.
Josh knew nothing but said, thats ok, but then we dont need the stool because i can see him standing behind you, and he put the stool away.
We practised Reiki all night and later talked about what we felt. The woman i worked with said, she felt nothing but heard the humming of bees around her.
So when i read your words coming home……was to much for me.
Is Alyssia still doing Reiki or is she to tired from the work at night? Ive seen your nature pictures and what a wonderful place is that to live and grow.
Thats how i see it, you grow with Emrie. When shes a beautiful young woman, you will be a beautiful Crone………..
I love growing old but its not always easy. Since i took up this new study phyto therapy i must work very hard. So today is a rest day and tomorrow i will meet with Yvette. In the morning i pick up Dorie near Amsterdam. Together we drive to Bloemendaal to Yvette and spend the day (chatting). Ill spend the night on Yvettes couch and will be back next morning to feed Venus.
Thats a piece of my live here in NL.
Sending loads of love to you dear Grace
