many years ago, upon setting out for Oregon,  from Michigan,  setting out to create a new and different life that made sense,  sitting at a picnic table in a remote part of Glacier National Park,  wondering about what i'd done,  what i wanted to do,

an old woman appeared and came to sit with me.  She asked about where i was from,  where i was going,  and then she asked why.  I felt relieved to tell her the LONG story of it and did,  slowing at the end to tell about how i imagined it would or could all be.  She had listened silently through it all and remained silent for a time when i had run it all out …. and then said,  "There's a snake in every garden."  We shared some food and then she walked a way and i could hear her drive off.

The snake now is in the form of dogs.  And i really can't say much at all about it because i can't get a good enough distance from all the Feelings.  But as this is a journal, it needs its place here in this moment,  in the beginning of it.

There will be 5 dogs living here.  Alyssia's,  daughter Jenny and her man's 3, and Tay.  Right now,  Jenny brings her 3 sometimes when she comes to work.  There is a lot of joyfull comotion.   They run and spin and are thrilled to be away from their small yard in Chico.   There is also a prevading tone of Laissez-faire on her part.  There's a lot more that could be said about this, but i don't have it right now.  Going on into the Now,  so far Tay has done well enough with this…has been ok with trying to learn a way to be a part of it all,  but recently there is a shift and she is confused.   A lot of the shift is focused around Puppy.  A major player in this Big Story that i have not talked about yet.  Puppy is a little cat now.  We found her on the trip here from N Mex,  next to a gas station dumpster,  and as we thought we were walking away from her,  she simply followed, undaunted.  Maybe 6 weeks tops…hardly weaned.  She ended up being put in the back seat of the Old Cowboy's truck,  burrowing into all the stuff there next to Emrie's car seat,  PURRING.    Long story short,  from the first moment here,  as we moved around this Hill,  taking long walks through this forest,  Puppy would follow along.  Sometimes she would lead the way.  She was very tiny.  She acted like a puppy,  and so,  named Puppy Merced Hill.  Merced for the dumpster's city.   She stays outside,  has a box in one side of the horse trailer.   continues to follow everyone everywhere,  the kids especially,  and now often goes tree branch to tree branch.   Over time, when the door to this travel trailer is open,  she has snuck in and also over time has gotten past the initial hissing from Tazmeena to the point of napping with her on the back bed, shoulder to shoulder. Tay chases her.  She flies fast and knows all things cats need to know.  Tay chases her less and less,  and often doesn't chase her at all.

This is getting too long.  It will need to be in two parts and the next should picture Puppy.  So for now,  the Issue that has arisen often begins with Jenny's dogs trying to catch Puppy.  I think this is true.   They are always told No,  but they continue and in the past Tay had joined them.  But the other day things changed.  Her dogs had been told NO very very loud many times all morning as she tried to keep them in the Old Buck Yard,  them escaping over and over,  her pulling them back etc.  A tense thing….Tay being kept inside a lot to not add to the confusion.   At the end of that day,  they were again after Puppy who was under Emrie's outside playpen.  and something changed.  I  THINK that Tay deccided she needed to become some kind of Enforcer and she got into a very loud and toothful exchange with the 3 of them,  had to be pulled off and away.

ok.  am going to quit here.  Think more.  before going on.  But the crux of it is that i don't know how to go forward.  It's all very peaceful when it's just Tay.  But it's NOT just  Tay and it won't be just Tay.   So will leave it at this for the moment and try for a pic of Puppy.

the pic here is of a Pinecone House that the kids made of one of the old fallen pines.

(((Grace))) any more than 2 dogs has the potential to become a pack & the scary thing about a pack is the “mob mentality” which functions from the lowest common denominator… back in the early 70’s in a big share house in the hills outside of Melbourne with three dogs who were all good on their own with their individual owners however one day they got together went next door and bit the tail off one of the neighbour’s goats… the neighbour was ok about it as he had dogs too but they were never allowed to roam as a pack again.

    Just deleted my comment.
What I said was it might actually be easier in terms of stabalizing the pack if all five dogs were there all the time. Dogs pick up on tensions among people, too. Who is alpha among the people? My understanding is there can be an alpha female and an alpha male. Sounds tough. Good luck. You gotta love a dog who’ll stick his neck out for a cat, though!

When Puppy started sleeping in the Trailer–well, now she is Tay’s responsibility. …to protect.
You can find a new home for the kitten. Pack dynamics–dogs and people. Never easy.

WONDERFUL story Grace…’there’s a snake in every garden’
Very distressing situation dear one. I will wait for your next post to see how this works out and pray the adults are able to find a wise solution.

interestingly enough, the Goats are not an issue with this. All of the dogs, except Alyssia;s dog Zoey have been IN with them and find them just beings. No sense other than that.
so, not Goats. But just the freedom to run. The freedom to be wild. It’s the intention to have chickens here….the little cat Puppy is the training ground for the chickens. How to LEAVE THINGS ALONE.
the 3 of Jenny’s…they know eachother, move as one. Tay is not a part of that and also doesn’t much know other dog things. She is also at the mercy of her genetics which are to herd things and how to protect.

tensions of people. Yes, so much and Tay is overly
    sensitive to this.
alpha. that concept….. always at play with dogs and i guess it might be so, but with Tay and I, there is no alpha, we share. Maybe that’s an issue here. I am willing to look at that if i have to.
people….alpha….that’s a huge question….a negotiation at this present time, does there need to be an alpha? Why would any of us be willing to defer to other to designate that? This brings to mind again, that word of Agency.

Puppy will stay. It’s not just Puppy, it’s more than that, Puppy is the training ground for all that might come. and she is very capable of taking care of herself. Which allows her to become a teacher.
dogs and people. for sure, it’s a challenge.

it won;t work out for a while, will be a long process, but we will do what we can know to do. I’m hoping that once there are individual “homesites” that it will make a difference. Now, it’s such a tangle of all of us in a small space but nonetheless, we need to act from day to day in a mindfull way.

Is it possible Tay was protecting Emrie’s playpen and not Puppy?

Tay is male, right? I don’t know a lot about this stuff, but I think that would make him alpha male and you alpha female. I’ll bet this will be much more naturally unfolding once you have your own “den”. “Laissez faire” doesn’t work well with establishing authority, so I wonder if the other dogs don’t understand their place in their hierarchy. And then it seems cats and dogs usually work things out on their own — but maybe not with kitten and soooo many dogs. Arg!
Ps auto correct turned alpha male into aloha male. Maybe you’d like that term of art better?

This is a lot! You tell the story so well, leaving us with some sort of cliff-hanger! What WILL happen next?
Truth of course is that change comes slowly and patience is very much needed. Lots of love to you as you move through this. xo

Saw the title of this post yesterday and knowing how I am about snakes, didn’t read it cause there might be a photo of what I fear. This morning I came because I said to myself, I could always shield my eyes…!
For what you all are trying to achieve, time and patience surely are the givens but so is mutual respect. Not saying that there isn’t any, just saying that I think you are right in believing that once you have individual “homesites”, maybe the boundaries of that will help ease the tension between the other dogs, Tay and Puppy. I imagine, as you have alluded to, that it is a huge change not only for you but especially for Tay to go from the routine of your solitary life in New Mexico to this communal one.
Assume that the responsibility now of caring for the goats has been equally divided. You don’t say or maybe I missed it but it must be so moving for Jenny to finally be reunited with her herd…

Adding my two cents, Tay may have been showing the others who is boss and so may be the one to help control them as time goes on. The children, building forts. All children should have such luxuries.
I am so glad you gave the kitten a home. And loved the story of the snake in every garden. I am going out to shovel the 5″ of snow that fell over night. Hope you have sunshine!

My two cents worth Grace. Tay has accepted Puppy as part of the Home Pack which is not so with the Chico Three. Tay also tolerates the Chico Three because there are more of them, the end of Tay’s tolerance is where one of the Home Pack is threatened. And Mo is absolutely correct, when the packs combine there has to be a human leading the expanded pack with absolute control. I’d also add that a pack of 5 dogs need work to do . . . it’s just too many dogs to be idle.
It’s the Year of the Dog in more ways than one for you.

No. Tay is spayed female. at a young age, so is really
non gender. Rather than gender, she is her genetics, which are Ca tahula and Australian Shepard cross.
I look at the thing of Alpha. I think, maybe…but i also
have another thing going which is some kind of mutual understanding.

Stop is a good start but if a dog has something it shouldn’t in it’s mouth ie a chook, a kitten, a pie, whatever, it’s a good thing to learn to drop whatever it is on command. I looked after a friend’s Red Setter years ago, Roly was a kind gentle dog but thick as a brick, one day I found him ever so tenderly & gently licking a chook, the poor girl died of a heart attack. I was very happy to give him back to my friend once she got her life sorted!
