Alyssia had appointments today at the VA in Sacramento.  Kids were here.  Julian, almost 9,  his first day  back from his father's in New Jersey for the summer.

Emrie is enamored by her brother.

i got this book for him,  for us,  for the library of the Hill.   He likes it.  we talked a lot.  Different things.  He brought up Home School….saying…they can't teach me how to live here.  He's unsure about eating the eggs of his Chicken.   Are they her children?  We talked.

Talking with a 9 year old  can wear you out.   I was on my way down  to give water to the Wall Garden at A and stopped to sit a minute on the Hammock at B.  I fell asleep.  Sitting in the hammock  at near dusk.   I awoke and

"they said"

drawing is how you witness.  Cloth is how you celebrate.

Beautiful book! And, what is about falling asleep in a hammock when you hadn’t planned to? Something precious I think.

Yes! Making things is how we witness and celebrate the beauty and the mystery of life. Including fire and nine year olds.

I do love a good field guide. It’s how I grew up and I’ve always believed that when you know a few facts you begin to understand uniqueness as well as interconnectedness.

I love what “they said”. In my world (as you put it) those terms make sense to me. They are words that create feelings and experience that are genuine to my heart.
I was reading yesterday of a group of plants called the first responders. They are the plants that are among the first to repopulate an area after an insult has been done to the earth. Like Ironweed can be for areas that have experienced fire. Have you ever heard of this? Can you keep this in your vision as you keep going?
Sleep. Blessed sleep. Emery. Julian. Rejuvinating.

Field guides are great. I’ve been enjoying your posts with mystery plants, wondering what they are. I’m familiar with chaparal plants near Los Angeles, less with things that grow up north. You have a rich place to live. I’d love to sit on your hill and draw trees. Drawing is witness, but also understanding.

I came back again (I often do) to check and see if I actually left a comment or just commented in my head. 🙂 It’s good that you are having a conversation about home schooling and I love that you are building a library. Maybe Julian could make a field guide for the hill?

Love that your post appeared at the same time as this post by John Muir Laws on the making of this very guide

I confess I haven’t sat through the whole thing (yet), but thank Don for putting me on to this new-to-me blog for the Kindred Spirits
