at first,  in my mind,  i thought Ponderosa Pine…because it was familiar,  but, looking,  Not.  The Law's Field Guide To The Sierra Nevada,  the key words:  sparce, multi branched crowns.  Large, heavy cones with savage spines.  savage.  give away.  Foothll or Gray Pine.

do i call them spines?…they are like petals of a kind.    Individually pulled loose and off and wrapped in the cotton cloth,  set in a jar of water a week or so.   Color of Earth.   Fugitive?  i don't know.  i googled some but came up with nothing.  But Pine.  I am guessing strong Tannin.   Only can wash and hang on cloth line in Sun.

    hello Grace,
Perhaps this is a cone from the local Djivan Gasparyan, formerly called “digger pine”.
A wondrous tree prized by ancient locals. Check out this link for more: https://www.conifers.org/pi/Pinus_sabiniana.php
Chico area is rich country. Persimmons in October/November are sublime.
    peace,

Save some seeds maybe. Pine can be full of tars so there may be a whole lot of washing after. Nice to experiment.

Such a warmly-colored cloth … I imagine it smells wonderful, too
By the way, I finally watched the John Muir Laws video about the making of the Sierra Nevada field guide … well=worth the hour spent

I would not want to step on one of those bare footed! I can see the “savage spiked flower petals”. The picture you took is amazing – each petal looks as though it is hand carved (or rodent carved to get at the nut). I haven’t seen anything about the dye qualities on line but, I think your observation cloth is an interesting way to go. Tread gently on the leaves of the book of nature…
