i love these.  Here they are again,  with the Rain,  as they were last year.  Everywhere,  in profusion up here at Campsite C.  and not at B or further down.  Just this top of this Hill.  Ecosystems.

i see these out the kitchen window as i stand at the sink.   Amidst so much Clover this year.  I don't remember Clover last year?   See how they have long stems that then leaf like a lily pad  and then up through that leaf pad,  the stem continues and there will be one more leaf, smaller,  to accompany the blossoms.   There is no reason i can imagine for this extravagance of form except Joy.  Except Wonder.  It would not be necessary i think.  But it IS.  There are so Many.   Another of the truly emblematic WONDERS,  like Giraffes,  testimony to some Unfathomable Intelligence that set this Planet into motion.

my kids used to sometimes ask  me about God.  What i thought.  and what i ended up being able to offer was that i don't know.  I didn't believe in a God like their grandma talked about,  my mother.  But what kept me wondering was things like the incredible  complexity of life in the Oceans.  All the myriad fish and corals,  the  vast array of insects and butterflies,  their COLORS and designs.  All the colors and designs would not be necessary, really,  for things to live,  to be attractive as food.  A brown butterfly could go to a plain white flower.  Good enough.

and that line of thinking remains true for me.  It's extravagance.    Way BEYOND extravagance.  SomeThing LOVES amazement and wonder.  I will never know.  But even in these plants that are Everywhere now,  and only in the spring.  It's evident.  Proof of Something.  Like JOY.

It grows here. We eat it.
I think it is evolution. What brings about new form. And it that there is the joy of life. Maybe just in living it.

Oh miner’s lettuce..the first time i ever saw it I was 7 years old..we were about to move from San Francisco to the east bay..and we were out exploring in a yellow ford truck..my mama held my little sister and i sat humped in the middle and whenever my dad shifted the gear shift would bang my knee..we found such a beautiful spot..a sandy creek bed in the middle of what seemed like nowhere and miner’s lettuce grew all around..my parents were so excited..at first we nibbled and then we picked and took it home for an amazing salad..it seemed..and was a world away from the city where i had always lived..and was the very first thing i had ever foraged…what a nice memory you have given me gentle day grace

Walt Wilkins’ song “Poetry” has a verse that fits here:
    Somebody made everything
    From the soul inside
    out to Saturn’s rings
    How my baby smiles
    and how Ray Charles sings
    Of course we were created
The clouds make rain, the ocean makes sand
The earth breathes fire and lava makes land
Now that took a mighty hand
    and a wild imagination
I do believe that it is more than enough to wonder, and love, and be joy-full …

Miners Lettuce is on your list of Permaculture perennial things to eat. I think. Add it to your breakfast.

Yes, yes, the tiniest little beetle with the wildest spots, the wings on dragonflies and how they reflect light. It convinced me that the creator is the best designer. It’s so simple, everything just is.

yes. and for no reason. that’s the thing. for no reason. Just the initial leaf, like a lily pad. Just that initial leaf. It would be Beauty FULL and very fine enough, but no….it goes ON. the stem rises and yet another leaf and the blossoms, then. There is no REASON for all this. No need. All could be accomplished without this extravagance….??????

Complexity is a kind of extravagance. And intelligence. My father would’ve added the elegance of math to the proofs of the wonder of the world. By the time he was helping me with calculus in high school, he was so done with “God.” But there was trout fishing. The ability to calculate how fast a curve would unfold given a set of variables. Mountains. Stars.
