just out from the canopy frame,  you can see a little that is left from last year.  Clear gravel and crushed stone.  The rest is covered mostly with clover.  That thing about the front and the back that the Rinpoche taught at Jewel Heart Temple in Ann Arbor so many years ago:  The bigger the front,  the bigger the back.

It GROwS.  Because we were Here,  last year,  last summer.  Because we GARDENED last year,  last summer.  Everything is new and different in response to our having been here.  In response to what we did.  in response to Us.

the clover is LUSH and so elegant a nutrient to the Earth here.  But also, it is High.  It is hip,  almost waist high for Emrie.  And this is also where the rattlesnakes hang out in this and the next month or two until the Heat sets in.  So, amidst the luxurious clover,  snakes might very well move through their own days,  living their lives.

What to think?

When it was gravel and crushed stone last year,  we could SEE the ground under our feet.  We could gaze over the space and see.  Now we can't.  Julian has learned,  at 9 yrs,  to take the snakes into consideration.  He's learned that these next couple months belong to them.  Emrie doesn't know.  and there's no way to tell her.  She is a very physically active child.  She MOVES.

So…how do we work this?

somewhere in here is the faucet for the water.   You can see, if you click it to enlarge,  all the many Storks Bill or Cranesbill.  Somewhere in there is where we turn on the water to give to the Asian Pear,  the Plumcot.  To the maybe still viable grapevines along the fence that have been taken over by the Vetch.  The Plant People here are INtenSe and GO!  What to think?  How to live?

Do the goats need to worry about the snakes? Such intense growth for such a short season, wonder sets in on how the plants grow under ground when the conditions for above ground deteriorate. Shoring up for the next growth opportunity. you need some well beaten paths..

I would use a brush hook or a motorized brushcutter to be selective about what gets mown, tending edges & fencelines is an ongoing task with looking after acreage and animals.

So, no out back till Winter? Too bad. Emrie might wear ankle bells maybe so you and critters can hear her, but she will learn ‘no going there’ like she learned what’s okay to touch inside. Someone has to get to the water and hook up a hose right? Maybe pipe extension to safer ground? Hope they don’t edge up to home.

i don’t think so. But i don’t know a lot about it yet.
I don’t worry about them tho, i think there is mutual
    awareness when necessary.
Around the rest of the Hill, paths, yes. They have
been established. They work. Down here, it’s a
    different story.

Scary, yes and no. Remember, we only saw 3 snakes
last Spring, and pretty sure one was seen twice.
They are not agressive. And as soon as the Heat begins
they will disappear into the upper forest when we never
    see them. So far.
Now is the time i need to be down in that space planting,
    so can’t stay away.

yes..probably my old trusty N Mex weed whacker. Just
in the immediate area of the Wall Garden and then the
    water spigot.

no…this is just very temporary. And just down at that Garden
area. We’ll have it figured out very soon. The area around here
where this little travel trailer is, where the Goat worlds are
is open to her. Also, the “yard” down at B. A lot of Out for
her. Just not there in the next week or so. We can cut the
big Grasses back around the water and hose connections, around
the base of the two fruit trees. This is a Growth surge and
will slow or stop. Just haven’t seen it before.

kept thinking…about Paths…and should say that
the paths we follow are Goat Paths….they are
brilliant at cris crossing to everywhere and their
    paths are very clear.
    yes…teach Emrie path walking.
and they make sense in so many ways…leaving the vast
majority of the Hill to the Beings that live out there…
including the snakes. Leaving them their private
    worlds

Rattlesnakes live here and all thru the dry summer months we will see them. Lots of children have grown up on our land and they learn about snakes. Never stopped them from running full tilt thru the tall meadow grass. Bending to pick a head of lettuce last summer in our garden, a rattlesnake let me know it was right there where my hand was about to go. They are startling and our primal fear rises up, but no one in 49 years has ever been bitten by one. Important to remember.

I see the faucet but would never put my hand in that green stuff. Not knowing. I wish the goats could come eat all that clover. That would solve the problem but it’s too close to the food plants–which they would also EAT. My gardening won’t begin for another month.
