Sometimes we box ourselves in, saying, well I can’t or don’t do that and here I am thinking of the box of self-doubt that I put myself in, years ago, when you began to speak to me of cloth…so one day, a flap was tossed aside and a piece of ribbon was placed in a jar, filled with foraged bits and color came to the ribbon and gradually, all of the sides of the box fell down as Cloth became a way for me to speak from the place of Place and landscape.
AND in thinking of boxes, I think of the state of our country and I cannot make sense of what is going in in this place called America. So I look for the quiet joy and positiveness of each day and boy is it hard to find sometimes…but my neighbor Alan has come over more and more, for a little borrowing, to take us over to see how he and his boys are putting down gravel on the sides of his home, to ask advice about getting his backyard ready for planting. He is planning a huge party for his son who graduates from high school this month and came over to let us know that it may get a bit loud with music, etc. and I loved his joy. He even bought our nephew’s Jeep that we had been asked to sell…and yet, through all of this, I want to corner him (a Trump supporter) and ask him again, how can he support him, Alan a father of two girls; I want to ask him to tell me where he stands on abortion and so many issues that I personally think that he as a Latino should respond to BUT I don’t. I don’t because it is not out of fear of confrontation but more out of respect for how he lives his life and maybe, just maybe, the box that we sometimes put ourselves in with righteous and absolute indignation can have a flap opened and then another by simply getting to know one another and then quietly, beginning a conversation. I can already see this.
grace, this is way more than you possibly needed in a comment but the image of boxes opened up something that I needed to say.

Marti, My next door neighbor supported Trump also. Last week he was bemoaning stuff and at the top of his list was “The clown who is running this country.” Respect goes so far in allowing growth and change.

You might be feeling boxed in by how things go on the Hill.
You might be feeling boxed in by all the fences.
You might be feeling boxed in because it’s been raining so much-I feel that way here I’m Maine.
You might be feeling boxed in by the new abortion ideas.
