let it go for now.

"the idea of choices in self-presentation being  important"

"How i was choosing to be seen by all the other species here on this small piece of land where i live."

the whole drawing took moments but then.   I sat.  looking and began to erase.  Erase,  Erase  Erase.  The FACE.  Wanting to make an OLD FACE and it just wouldn't happen but then i got close but it got lost and at one point as in pic 2,  i just wanted to take the face away.

FACE.

the feet don't bother me.  they're not right,  but they don't bother me…they somehow suggest movement and it's just OK.  That left hand doesn't bother me,  it's presenting a question,  but that's ok too.

it's the FACE.  I erased it a million times,  trying to get to something that seemed Real and couldn't.    I thought for a long time about what a face is when we are looking inside of it…as in Out Through it…a mask kind of?    A face is what carries the equipment  for the going.  Eyes,  nose,  mouth…this is the face i am trying to get to…the one that carries the equipment

    Nice drawing Grace! I think the third face has strength. It does not seem young, it seems ….weathered?

    love what my words sparked for you! Also wanted to say i wondered if you could get close-ish to manzanita bark by way of Shiraz inktense color if you have it with just tiiiiny amount of sepia overlay then blended with water? or applied to the page with the pencil points dipped in water? Have not tried it yet. Don’t remember all the names of the colors as far as brown goes but shiraz, i think, is the way to get the maroon/purple anchored there.

    half a lifetime ago a friend asked me to do a portrait of her 10 year old daughter & she ended up looking 30 when I tried to draw her eyes, drawing age is a lot easier than drawing youth!

    it hasn’t happened yet, but i made note of your words.
    I do have Shiraz.
    I stipple color and then blend with water and a stiff
    brush that i have cut to a stiff stubble
