my grandson Jeff.  Alyssia's brother,  my daughter Jenny's son.   His Woman, T and their 2 year old daughter Brinley to whom this day was dedicated.   They live in Sacramento.   A Birthday.  She and Emrie are 3 months apart.   In this pic,  Jeff and T are setting up the rock painting table.  He had his times,  but i can say,  with deep conviction,  that he is the best Dad ever.  He is now living his dream.   He has a FAMILY.   His theme song  since he was a little boy  would be the Barney song.   I love you,  you love me.  We're a happy fam i ly.   He's Got it.   Finally got it.  Bless him,  like really, Please,  Universe,  Bless him.  Bless them.

missing from the pic are me and Jenny's man.  Otherwise,  Us ,  minus as usual my son,  his woman and their 6 year old daughter who live in Colorado.   on the right is Fate.  Who is doing really very well,  finding his own particular Way in this world.   You also see Julian with his sling.  He broke his arm two days ago.  New skateboard incident.  The look on his face is often the look on his face to me.  I love him.  He loves me.  We do not find it easy.  I don't know why.  My challenge.

This is the Feather River.    This park was completely under water 2 years ago when the spillway of the Oroville Dam broke and flooded.    It took two years but the park is back with many many wheelchair accessible trails.   The river is a Salmon Run.

Today we saw many spent,  dead salmon at the bottom.   Washing to the shore.  They come.  spawn.  die.  Feather River.

Why are there so many dead Salmon? Is that the normal number or does it have something to do with the broken spillway? And why is the ground corrugated? I feel like a three year old – why? why? why? but things are so different there.
When you first moved there and then when you evacuated last year I spent a lot of time on google earth. The first landmark that I recognized was the Feather River. I’m glad that you followed Acey’s post about her river.

Absolutely a hug to the heart to see Jeff and his family. How good it is to know that he has his family and through hard times, learning times, growing times, La Familia holds and that is the truest blessing. In Jan, Jon and Giana come- family circle holds…

I love Love LOVE that you made your introductory river visit surrounded by family and with so many of their stories now woven into your own experience of the Being There variety. Also greatly enjoy seeing Emrie in a larger context of peer-level relatives. Always tried to picture her surrounded by others when she visit’s her father’s people but could not. Now that will be much easier.
Since I opened-up the River aspect of my own daily world/lanscape awareness I have started to care about (and notice) more and more details about individual rivers’ similarities to each other. It’s almost like rivers have personality types. A notion I’ve never thought to research to see if scientists or other earth-obsessed types have been there already and set something into place for me to use as an identification key/field guide. If anyone knows where i might start discovering what exists along these lines I’d really appreciate you clue-ing me in. Already spend enough of time willfully reinventing wheel after wheel. Am finally getting old enough to lay that burden down and take shortcuts where I can.
The vibe and general appearance of this section of the Feather puts me ao much in mind of the Brandywine – a small tributary in PA and DE – that it’s downright eerie. Spent a fair amount of time wandering specific sections of her banks at grammar school and jr. high age.
Also in relation to Jaime’s question about the corrugated ground. Not trying to butt-in at all but thought the corrugation indicated this area was a boat launch? At least that’s what this sort of ‘implant’ means up this way…

oops I just looked it up on Google and see the Brandywine is a creek and not a river. Makes me realize I don’t even really grasp the official order/hierarchy of water ways.

This park is right in town.
The salmon…it is how it is for them. How it has
always been. They are born in the Rivers, migrate to
the Ocean, return to the place of birth mate, spawn
and die. Their life is the Journey to the Ocean and back.
the corrugated ground…is the boat ramp. It was the
easiest place for the 2 year olds and Fate to play in the river’s
edge. When we were there a small group of older women
were setting in their kayaks. The rest of the river’s edge is native wild that has revived from the flood in a very BeautyFullway. All along, there are vast expanses of
    Wild edge. Very close by.
Tay and i will go back. Not to this place but others.

I didn’t go to Fate’s birthday in Sacramento in October.
This is why they came up here for Brinley’s. Jeff
loves this gramma. He brought me a bell that one of
his customers had at a yard sale. He is just such
a sincere human being. His devotion to his kids
is as big as the sky.

there is an enormous vibe of personhood to this River.
What i am determined to find is the First People’s
View. The Maidu here are a Salmon related people.
We somehow once again missed the Salmon Festival
this year, when the Run is revered and celebrated.
there is so much to learn
and yes, boat launch. I don’t think motors are permitted
will find out, but kayaks and canoes.
i wanted to wander the edge, looking for mugwort but
it was too ify with the little ones….they had no
concern about running. There was a LOT of running.

Wouldn’t it be cool if there is someone who has written or spoken about rivers the same way Stephen Harrod Buhner has about plants. I’ll ask my friend whose living and lifestyle depends upon rivers if she knows of some resources.

How lovely to see your family gathered by this calm, reflective river. You seemed so much more solitary in New Mexico. Now there are children of all ages around you.

i was. solitary in New Mex. And i miss that.
i knew that everyone would/could go it without me, on their own. I felt ok with that.
and i knew, which is true, that i loved so much that
    solitary.
    so, why did i come?
I answer this question now as we go.

ink washes..nothing. They are helping me be
mindless….with no intent. Just a few marks
a day on this, then the wet brush, watching
the colors bleed. That’s all. It’s very good
    for me right now.
