to dig a hole,  for planting a small tree.  This is the tool.   You kneel or squat.  After a while, end up  sitting.   Feel with your fingers and find the perimeter by fingertip.   Then,  this tool.   Moves  down along the edge and over time creates enough of a gap that  the  Rocks are loosened and can be lifted out by hand.   For this one,  i filled the hole with water and will wait till tomorrow to try again.  Once it's out,  i think i can plant the Fig.  This is the third day i worked on this hole.

tilting the paper just a little…in morning Sun….the graphite looks like silver.

"graphite pencils produce grey or black marks that are easily erased,  but otherwise resistant to moisture,   most chemicals,  ultraviolet radiation and natural aging."  wikipedia

and with kneadable erasers,  you can just press,  just firmly,  and lift the mark away,  layer by layer,  particles by particles.

graphite is Magic.

The handle alone on that tool make it amazing. I’m happy to read that you’re taking your time with this one .. letting it get a good soaking is the best idea. Your paper is looking lovely.

Love how rocks quietly move up through the soil, I first noticed this in a vegetable garden where I carefully removed every stone before planting the seedlings, then when I turned the soil to plant out again for the following season there was just as many rocks, this happened every season in the 7 years of tending that garden so I grew a dry stone wall there too!

I love everything you’re doing in a day. I know from my own experience it can get a bit much. One misses the ‘older’/(younger) days of lugubrious choice and slow rhythm that always feels to me like its own reward.

How pencil marks can resemble stitch is what grabs me here.
