Surnai Molloy  was raised on an eight mile long island offshore Galway by parents who ran an organic garden and lived as simply as possible,  with a very small income.  Home schooled until the age of 15,  she spent her afternoons going to the sea and walking along the cliffs.  Currently she is a creative writing student at the National University of Ireland,  Galway.     Parabola

“And we learned to say sorry.”
And I look at your cloth, the color of nourishing mounds of good earth, good dirt, the the tiny pieces of cloth and string, tendrils, seeds, sproutings and it comes full circle because today, I simply said, Thank You.
I said thank you because I finally took down the dried bunch of oregano and dried bunch of thyme, hanging in my garage since this summer. Laid them out and crushed the leaves then crunched them almost into a powder to fill my little glass herb jars. All the while, I thought of the good dirt, some of it enriched by your goats when we would visit you and take back their gold droppings. I thought of the sun, coaxing growth, I thought of our precious water because here in New Mexico, water is more precious than diamonds, giving life to my plants. I thought of how the oregano comes back year after year, holding under snow, wind, loving rain and of how I choose different types of thyme to plant each year and while I thought, I simply said Thank You for it all…
