coming home today from the day In Town at Alyssia's home.

Please.  if you can.   listen to this "talk" with S.  Jenkinson.   I only listened once…need to repeat.  There's a LOT and some,  i'm unsure what i heard?   But in the last few moments,  he stated….   Totally succinctly,  exactly what i have been struggling with in the last weeks.   Am so grateful for this.   To hear my thoughts coming out of someone else's mouth.  What blessed relief.  Release.

Toward the end, about the 1:10:31 minute mark, paraphrasing, Stephen Jenkinson says that we don’t have to be authoritarian, that we should have a “willingness to be uncertain citizens”; be mindful of a time to come.He notes that he is in despair, took him a while to recognize what it was, but despair because he is afraid that “we are going to be ok again” ..”wants people not to be ok because the sense of ok is too expensive for the world”…that we have umpteenth chances to live with less, to be entitled to less, to pull back, be ok with our kids having less than we did…
Spoke of how even in the place where he lives, off the beaten path (my sense of it) he sat and listened to the quiet, “100 yr old quiet” that only took a plaque to achieve this quiet…worries about us being given the all clear…”
Lots here to consider,I’m not ready to put down thoughts except to share this:
Yesterday my twin grand kids celebrated their 11th birthday. When they have had their friends over for birthday parties, no gifts are exchanged, and it is the same when they have been invited to birthday parties. Their friends and their friend’s parents agree that just the pleasure of having friends over for a meal and cake is the best gift of all. This year it was a virtual celebration. We sent them each a book and a homemade card plus some collage materials that I had been gathering when I thought I would spend a month with them next month in CA but that has been cancelled.
In their phone call to us yesterday, they both said that the real joy of their birthday came when their teachers called them and told them that they could permanently keep the class guinea pigs. They had built a wooden “guinea pig hotel” with their Dad as part of their at home projects and without a doubt, they said that welcoming Dumpling and Hershey (the guinea pigs) into the family forever was the best gift of all…

I am changing because of this virus and know that we, most of us, will be different going forward. I chafed at first but now I am grateful for this time of less that has given us so much.

I hope my internal repair can be as creative as the manzanita tree’s outward repair.. maybe I will find I have sentient beings keeping me strong like a little bear or extra eyes.

Marti- thank you for the synopsis. For me, sometimes it is so hard to listen to people speak like this as it often is reflecting some of what I am thinking. People want to be “ok”, they want to do everything they used to do, and everything be like it used to be. They want to go do the shopping thing, etc as that may be the only thing they know to do. One could see it in people who were complaining that they were bored.
My brother and I joked that when we were growing up, the last thing you ever said in our house was that you were bored. My parents had lots of ideas for us if we ever said that-yardwork and housework!

the tree pics just filled in several missing chunks of grounding and centering for me. Manzanita spirit has a lot to whisper in your ear.
will listen to the podcast tonight as the cat and I greet twilight.

Thank you for pointing me towards his thoughts. It’s just as I wrote Marti that sometimes I have a very hard time listening to certain thoughts.
I had already changed over the last few years finding little desire to go shopping (have too much and weeding out) and have at times despaired over the behavior of people. I guess i was just raised differently with no television so I was always reading or creating.

laughed because just this morning I realized my fingernails have never been so dirty. I just can’t keep them out of the garden’s soil – need the ongoing sensory connection to ground.

Have been wearing gardening gloves for 30 years, Old Man Crow is a musician and has worn gardening gloves for 40 years so when we started working together he convinced me it was a good idea to value my hands as an artist, he keeps his in good shape for the guitar! It seemed clumsy at first but within a week I could plant out even the tiniest seedlings with gloves on.

Well. I listened almost to the end. I had to join an online meeting for work. Then I watched the news, and didn’t get back to the podcast. Orange, in his arrogance, is telling the country to rebel against careful governors and citizens, and just go back to church in person. He is losing his popularity with his base, so now he’s going lower. We, in Northern California, had at least two towns who, counter to orders, went to church on Mother’s Day, and now they have multiple Covid cases, and likely will have even more in those semi-rural areas. Those are small incidents, but people are being encouraged by him to ignore science, data, and experts, and are finding “reasons” not to wear masks, social distance, and try to shelter when they can. He’s undermining the governors, who are filling the leadership vacuum he created. I’m so disheartened that more people don’t share Jenkinson’s thoughtfulness. He sees the big picture that so many find uncomfortable. May they find comfort this Sunday…

And to follow-up, one of the local websites had an alert on Friday that our governor would be requiring face masks in pubic on Tuesday. Reading the comments under the article told me so much about people–“we can’t be told what to do, we’re Americans,” “you don’t tell Americans what to do,” “this governor needs to go so that the state can be much better.”
