20210825_092824

these came yesterday.

i'd ordered from this seed company in late winter and these were in their catalog.  included in the order and received word that they would arrive to my zone …9…at the appropriate time.

i'd had some Walking Onions in N Mex…Jim,  the jewelry maker who i convinced to makes gates for me was also a gardener.  Gave them to me and they grew.  Back then,  i didn't use the internet to know things…still the card catalog at the Library days,  and he didn't know a lot either,  just liked them.    I used the leaf blades like chives.  Didn't eat the little bulbettes that blossom out at the top…unsure….but now,  i know that they are FINE and if you like onions,  are wonder FULL additions to Anything…whole or otherwise.    I don't know what happened to that part of the gardenyard…something about when the tree there died?  or…..it's in the don't need to know card in that Rolodex of the Mind.   Just remember that they were Happy to grow.

i'll plant some at B and i think also at the 3 connections for water in this system…one at A for the Pear Plumcot and Grape Vines,  at the outside the A space where i turn on water and then outside the fence of B…again,  where i turn on water…all 3 places leak a little.  it might be enough.   I'll also put some where the hose is that i turn on to fill the Doe Goat water tub at the Curry House,  i turn on the hose at the beginning of Pellet Feeding each eve and it runs a while to cool it down from the heat of the day.  There too.   Who Knows?

and SECOND….we are BACK to the old Typepad Comment Format.   Months ago,  when i complained to Typepad about the Ifyness of Comments,  they had suggested switching to DISQUS  and i had believed them.   It has since been a small nightmare…like having gone into a small claustrophobic room and turning,  realizing there was no door knob.  Today,  reading  Jude's energy at Feel Free,   i thought…i gotta TRY to get out of this room….and I filled out the Help Ticket and TA DA….we are BACK!   We are BACK to the old tried and true ify system….but at least there's air here,  at least it's only ify .  Ify is OK.  I am grateful for Ify tonight.

    Hi Grace,
Here’s a test comment. I can’t explain where I am or what I am doing… seem to be escaping into weird craft excursions (tatting, for instance – keeping track of the pattern takes the mind off the horrors of the day.)
Hope you raise a platoon of walking onions!
    Hugs,
    Diana

the blog people are so slow to repair things, but patience wins out in the end … glad to see the return of typepad comments
as for onions … I remember my mom used to return milk to the store at a certain time each year when the cows would get into wild onions and the milk would be affected … I’m similarly cursed, having sent back sushi the other day because it didn’t smell right (much to the bafflement of others who couldn’t smell a thing) … maybe my lack of sight and hearing has something to do with my outsized sense of smell
and library card catalogs … I used to be a maker and filer of those cards … in the good old days

love “walking onions” – maybe they are also called “Egyptian” walking onions? so wonderful to eat. and speaking of eating – I love this: “falling into stir fry, soup, omelets, just my mouth”. one of the things I miss ever so keenly growing things with my Mr. BaggyPants’ joy and knowledge so it is a right treat to hear about and see what others here grow and love.
and underneath the net band the walking onionscame in, do I spy some knitted lace? and tatting – in my studio “decommissioning” project, I sorted out tatting shuttles (7) and threads, into one container. kept a few – from my Mom, grandmother, and great-grandmother, with little notes of provenance. Others in a “ready to go” container. This project is definitely not my favorite occupation.

I hated disqus too. Good riddance! Those onions sound mouth watering. And this concept and phrase made me laugh: “the don’t need to know card in that Rolodex of the Mind”. I’m afraid I’ve got several cards going at this point in my life!

With all that is going on in the world, what I am about to say here may sound somewhat dramatic but to see your old comment format back, feel like coming home as does seeing the return of Jude’s Spirit Cloth blog come back..there is such a feeling of balance and spirit in finding things back in place…
walking onions…could they be grown in pots since I don’t have any land? Used to grow many red onions in the other place for eating, for dyeing cloth (gave me the most wonderful greens)…but even this place of duplexes and apartments offers up culinary joy in the form of wild onions that pop up on the ground by the apple tree…I gather them in the mornings and put them on everything, eggs, sliced tomatoes, on bagels with cream cheese, in pasta sauce, etc. I am thankful for their discovery.

I was gifted walking onions a few years ago. They seem to want to walk along the fence line, and then through the fence. This has been the summer of Hungarian pickles and I’m thinking that I might put the little guys in some pickle brine.
There was a good article in newspaper a few days ago about a vegetarian who was a very picky eater. He only would eat 3 vegetables. One of them was a red onion. Sliced thin, sprinkled with salt and let sit until limp. Then fry. He was right. It was perfect.
