maybe you can see….down at the end of this road, the double gate that opens out to CareFree Way, the nothing road that comes from Old Olive. Up, in the tree…in the FAR DISTANCE is the ridge…many miles away, where i've never been yet and need to go.
i am walking. Down this road at dusk and then, into Dark. Michelle set out. Often at dusk into New York City. on foot. Such a Wonder to me…her setting out…into the City. She did it. Over and Over….came home. Told us what she saw.

Michelle helped me understand the wonders of City Life. Beauty in its simplest form and compassion and caring and finding the people on the street have their own stories. I am often awake all hours of the night, but am fearful of venturing out where I don’t know the area. She knew her area well. I do enjoy sitting by a campfire ring even without a fire, alone with the night sounds.

oh, this brought a song to mind … so apt, Billy Joel’s “Miami 2017” with the ending lyric …
“There are not many who remember
They say a handful still survive
To tell the world about
The way the lights went out
And keep the memory alive”
and now, re-reading the lines from the beginning, the song has taken on new meaning because of Covid …
today I will go back, re-read Michelle’s blog, and keep the memory alive

Autumn is on my mind, a time of gathering, a time of harvest, a time of readying ourselves for the quiet time. So I looked for autumn postings and was stopped in my heart by this post from September 21, 2012: She titled it “Autumn” and wrote, these words, with accompanying photos:
“Weeping is the sound of the season. White is it’s color in Chinese tradition. Autumn Equinox.”
Her last post was on Sept. 21, 2020…did she have a premonition that she would leave us during this season?

I was never comfortable reading that Michelle was out walking around NYC at night. But….she did live across the street from a police station and her neighborhood was pretty lively (my husband used to work at the courthouse nearby).
I do miss Michelle and her photos.

She was intrepid. Fearless. I used to feel some fear on her behalf, too, especially after Covid. I really miss her, too.

I think of her often, especially at this time of year. I went to school just blocks from her, so my travels in her neighborhood were all daytime. Just getting there and back was adventure enough for me. Then, I moved to the lower west side of Manhattan and got into the habit of wandering in the city that never slept. I sometime wonder if we didn’t cross paths. Both of us just observers.
