that post yesterday….i used the word installation.   incorrectly.   very loosely,  humorously,  and in accordance to my own interpretation.   Maybe just as:  materials gathered and arranged in a temporary form,  the interpretation of which maybe is only Seen,  Known to and by the gatherer but that may be recognized as Form by others in their own singular ways?   That's not the definition of installation,  but it's mine.   There must be a better word.  I wondered all day what a better word might be.    And as i continued with the dismantle of Things at B Garden i remembered what i was wanting to remember and found in one of the storage tubs….this book.   It needs to be brought Up and kept as an Evac Take.    Typepad only lets me post 2 pics at a time.  Tomorrow i'll put 2 more from the book and some words.    the Whole of the book,  the images,   takes me back to the Place i lived in New Mex.  Back to the Raft.   Which i called an altar.   I think about what Lisa Ross speaks of as Shrines.   Shrine.  Going to need to spend some time with that word too.  Shrine.

My mind is occupying interesting territory since the Storm.  Since T's death and all that is evolving from it.   I find self  realizing  i am

gone.

as i refocus on what is at hand,  as in,  what i am actually  doing,   I  am unable to tell myself where i Was.

tonight again,  the frogs sing.   Morning and Evening the Geese flew overhead.   Coming and Going  Going and Coming.  Same.

“i remembered what i was wanting to remember” … our older minds are like mines, full of tunnels and caches of precious materials … it’s easy to get lost in there

A very good question – the word “installation” or “shrine”? Maybe “poem”? I am going to be wondering about these words today. I might hang some cloth outside. I hesitate to do so, wanting to leave the landscape as is, but I make my mark on it so many ways, don’t I.

Interesting, Grace. I will have to check this out further, as I am beginning an online course on using recycled materials for fabric sculpture.

The definitions of ‘install’ are too limited. I understood what you meant and would have used the same word.

Grace~ “Shrine” always sounds so Formally Religious to me, but adding ‘living’ brings it to a different place. The cover of this book right away reminded me of the driftwood “houses” – structure, house shape, teepee shape, cave shape – that folks build at the beach near Emma Wood, where I like to go. One year there were many due to a Big Rain and driftwood year (el Nino(a)?). I marveled at the colored bits of fabric, or even a pair of white cotton pants, that blew in the salty breeze…the time and work involved in the building of these temporary ‘shrines’ to this place and time for the campers there…saying we are here, now, in this place. Then, slowly over time, they were gone.

I am back, reading through the comments … and I wonder, perhaps “assemblages” (and I must say I prefer the English to the French pronunciation)

This is so beautiful… I searched for Lisa Ross and found a 6-minute video she produced in 2009 with images, singing and chanting:
    https://vimeo.com/16780406
“To Mark a Prayer: Uyghur Mazar” contemplates the holy sites of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in Northwest China. Lisa Ross skillfully handles this delicate subject matter through her images, granting us an intimate view of the sacred. Words and voice by Sherisse Alvarez.”
