* the ground cloth….a piece of white raw silk forgotten in a jar with oak galls. Very surprised by the color.

yes. nothing but tannin.
i thought it would give a grey, grey/black. but this?????
there was a mushroom growing inside the jar. ????
it’s so gold.
there’s another piece of cloth in there somewhere, i think muslin.
i’ll look for it tomorrow.
Down by the Rooster Swamp, all the oaks are filled with galls. And…i think the wasps that use them are the same that the little Fig tree needs? need to go back and RE member. There is so much to
know in this world. it’s FULL of things to know. Brimming.LikeLike

I love the word ephemera … and the definition of it: things intended to be discarded, but then found to have value

Beautiful color; some of the best surprises come from not knowing exactly what color or markings you will get from the gifts of the land and that is why I love natural dyeing so much…but that is not to say that I don’t use other things like rust, and mesquite wood chips soaked in a bit of vodka and steel wool strands and frozen blueberries, natural yet but not foraged windfall…
Anything and everything is good to try: Do you remember when I first moved to New Mexico, I was so happy to be here that I sprinkled one of my cloths with hot Chile powder, rolled it up, stuck it in a glass jar to solar dye, knowing full well that the color would be glorious, vibrant red and orange but for only a short time…and the time, our first corn grew here and I made a cloth burrito, wrapping some smoke bush leaves, grapevine leaves and and mallow blossoms from the trail behind the house in corn husks and willing them to give me color- yes I got color that stayed but none from the corn husks but the joy in the doing and anticipation was and is so worth the time and effort…LikeLike

The surprise of forgotten jars, and golden color! I have oaks around, but haven’t found any galls. Maybe I’m not looking in the right places.
