when dogs attack livestock.   Livestock loosley meaning domestic animals that are kept in some kind of fenced area…some of those areas large,  acres,  so the animals have Freedom.   A lot of dogs will enter those areas and CHASE.   become bored and leave.  Some come in an interest in catching.   There is a deep primal thrill to taking down a running creature.   Killing i don't think is their first intent.  Eating rarely is.   To pull it down.  Disable it.  it often goes to kill,  stop movement.  But that is almost beside their point.  it's the initial thrill.

Vet came.  She had hoped for better.  A lot of the puncture wounds did heal.  But these major ones…there was a lot of necrotic tissue that was not sloughing off.  there was still infection.   She put him under.  completely then  cleaned it of all she could,  followed by deftly debriding.  meticulously cutting necrotic tissue from the tendon that you can see in the second pic.   There is simply a lot of his leg  "missing"…from being bitten off.    We will go back to the antibiotic injections.   She'll come again in a week.  Maybe need to repeat.   The hope is that he will build new tissue to connect the tendon.   But the muscle is gone.  "He's a peg leg now".  But she admired his spirit,  his ability to get around as well as he does.  Thinks he is a very fine Goat.    She sees 5 animals a week like this.  dogs.  this area of N. Cal is very rural.  Most people have livestock of some kind.    Yesterday it was a Goat and it's horse.  Both.   They are living down at UC Davis now.  For them it will be months.   For Sunny,  a month more or so to get as good as it's going to get.  For the wounds to "seal".   That's all we are hoping for now.

The animal control officer in charge of our case went on a two week vacation.  When she returns we will go to Animal Court.  The people with the dog do not want to bring the dog in.  They want to pay vet bills.  They say they promise it won't happen again.  Even tho we are not the first time.    We want the dog surrendered.  which means put down.  which means euthanized.   if Tay,   for as as much as she is  ME,  and i am HER,   were to draw blood ,  it would be what i would have to do with/to her.  There is just no choice.   The only reason Sunny's wounds are primarily this leg is that they were seconds into the attack.  They  had just pulled him down when i came screaming and running.   He was struggling,  fighting,  they would have continued to subdue him given a moment.  Their faces,  their mouths were full into his body.

just to say.

I’m so sorry Grace. This really sucks. You did do great with the puncture wounds. You will do great with whatever is left to be healed. Sunny Ray is so lucky to be loved by you and your family. Animals have a remarkable ability to not think things have to be a certain way. I’m pretty sure he is not thinking, “It shouldn’t be this way.” thus leaving him that energy to heal and compensate the best he can. Tell him I will be his cheer leader if that is something he would like. Good job Sunny Ray! More to go but you can do it! If I were there I would scratch him behind his ears. I would give you a hug, unless you would prefer the scratching behind the ear…I am so sorry but I really believe you can help him be the best he can be. It’s just who you are.

    jaime…i love
    your words
i want both. a scratch behind my ear and a hug. Both. He does too.
He is a very loving Goat and unusual for an old buck. They usually have little human exchange. Done with their usefulness. Old. Clunky. But he is our Sunny Ray. It’s funny. the kids really love him. Always asking…can we go in with Sunny Ray?
    His stinky old self.
    He is Gideon’s son.
Gideon the Beauty FULL. he did not acquire the Beauty of form, but he did, the Beauty of spirit.
That day of the attack, he was as usual, in his Space, meandering about, browsing leaves and twigs, Happy as a clam. My HOPE is that he will be able to navigate that same territory with his peg leg.
I will tell him. He hears things. i will tell him Jaime says
Good Job, Sunny Ray and is on his side as he goes.
i was encouraged by the Vet, complimenting his ability to Just Go.
and he does. he Just Goes. Dear and Best him.
if it goes that way, we will work out a more Easy terraine for him. Maybe over by Nogal. We think. His life. His life is Something. We will all figure it out.
thank you and love and thank you and love and thank you and love

He is of Gideon but he is also of himself and how noble he is; hanging on, his spirit rising to meet each day. He is of this also because he knows he is loved, cared for, an old goat who has earned his place in La Familia, worthy to be in the herd, worthy…loved.
Gentle hugs from me, for Sunny Ray; fierce hug to you from me. Thank you for showing us how it truly is. And know that you will do just fine with the injections, you have already done so. Sunny Ray will heal.
2013: our first year in New Mexico, we arrived toward the end of May and two weeks later we were visiting you. One of the favorite photos of our time together that day, you and I talking inside the goat pens, goats milling about, watching us, now and then one comes closer and I pet…
The following year, my daughter, son in law and our grand kids come to meet you and visit with the goats. The grands are 4 yrs old and marvel at how many goats mill around them. Granddaughter is a little shy around them, grandson joins them every chance he gets…a wonderful day, a time of family…Family comes in all sizes, shapes, people, animals- all one.

what a good vet you have found … Sunny Ray has such a good chance of making it with your combined forces …
I hope you are successful in court … it baffles me when folks don’t recognize the reality that a dog will do such a thing again and again … that it is not preventable

Whew. Grateful for the vet’s experience, even though — why does this have to happen??? I hold onto a lot of hope for Sunny Ray’s recovery to his previous level of enjoying life.

Oh Grace .. I am going to pray that the courts agree that the dog/dogs be put down. To think that paying the vet bill will make it Ok. What till the next time??? Unbelievable!!! I’m going to end this rant in a happier note .. so good that your vet has given such good news. I’m sending gentle love and hugs.

I too love Jaime’s words and also am here being a cheerleader! For you all!! Ask the vet about silver nitrate to help heal. Not sure if appropriate but works on diabetic wounds that go deep to the bone.

My heart goes out to you and Sunny Ray. You are amazing in all you do. Those people, I think they should not only give up their dog, but also pay the vet bills, What are they thinking? A human child could be next.

Grace~ I agree with the eloquent words posted before me and also send my well wishes, gentle hugs and love.
My son & DIL had to put down their dog when it killed their neighbor’s cat. They had tried and tried Everything to help her be a better dog, but that final straw would not let them continue on that path.
Take these photos and photos of Emrie on the hill to court. Geez.
Much Big Giant Love to you all. xo

OMG!! I did not realize the extent of his injury until I saw these photo. I was picturing a bite down (punctures and some tearing), not a bite out! When I first saw these, Iqbal wondered what was wrong because I kept saying “Poor baby!” And though I still feel bad for the dogs, I’m in full agreement–they need to be put down. I shudder to think it may have been Emrie running around when they showed up. (stress that to the court)
I’ll be a cheerleader for Sunny Ray, too, and would give him a hug if I were there.

yes…i am very sad for them, the people, sad for that dog…is a beautiful and perfect pit. but they came
from some distance away and entered a secure fence and
did this. nothing can change that. and it wasn’t the
first time. They are not responsible enough to keep this
    dog.

my daughter gave me her Shar-Pei mix. I loved that dog.
i came home from Albuquerque to find her sitting proudly
in my Guinea Hen Pen, all their heads bitten off.
I wanted to just find someone to take her, not kill her,
but was asked….why i would give someone else my heartache.
Some of them just can’t help it.
