i only had that one left…the  one  old so small brass safety pin.    i ordered some.  was careful to read the description….it said brass.  They are new.  and so,  shiny.  Gold looking.  i'll look around,  see if there's a way to "age" them…or as with cloth,  the walnut dip that gentles the brightness ….i cannot come up with the word in this moment.  If i do,  i'll come back and edit.   I had it this morning.*   But then,  i needed to leave.   I saw that the Community Garden was having its first work day of this year.   The Community Garden that is one of the projects of the African American Family and Cultural Center  here in Oroville.   the place that i had called in that first year i was on this Hill  because of that Garden.  and then there was Covid.   The really good and Good conversation with the people there and met one of them today.   in person.      Every where,  i read,   for change,  ….LOCAL  and COMMUNITY.   So,  we'll see.   i am signed up for their  emails of events.   The next being Tuesday,   a mental health awareness outreach event.  There's a Taco Truck till 2:00.   Emrie and i will go.    I'll keep showing up and see if there is a way i can be of use.  a way i can    fit.  be of Use.

The Community Garden project & the African American Cultural Center sound wonderful. So glad you are exploring that connection. …And the amazing basket/altar — not “disparate objects” but Life gathered together in one life. So beautiful!

Might be a good place for Julian to visit as well…
The community garden is such a fine communal activity. The African American Cultural Center has a terrific website; so many on-going programs to help, teach and inspire everyone; so well planned from anger management to help in all kinds of areas as well as after school activities for the children; a great Diverse Dance class and even a radio station. What a rich place.

I’m back because I am reading an article in the Washington Pose about Jose Andres, World Central Kitchen, that fits right in with your thoughts here grace on “safe…together…community.”
The producer Ron Howard has just completed a documentary on Jose Andres titled, “We Feed People.” Ron had made a documentary about the town of Paradise and during that documentary, he noticed Jose Andres and his team helping to feed the community.(As an aside, World Central Kitchen is here in the Taos area, feeding displaced community members, fire fighters, etc.)
The point is that Jose Andres engages with every community that his team comes to, enlisting them to help their community, using their own recipes:
From Ron Howard: “I had seen José speak, and I understood his great work and the entrepreneurial spirit he brought to what became World Central Kitchen,” Howard says. “But I didn’t understand how empowering it was for people. That the way the organization operated, the way it deputized people and encouraged them to join — how healing that was. … That was something I recognized in [‘Rebuilding Paradise’]. Because in that case, we did embed teams for a whole year there. And I could see that the people who did get involved in their community … did better. They coped better. They recovered sooner.”
Somehow, this just all seems to fit to me, reaching out, drawing people in, valuing them, respecting them= that is the way toward community…

We had our first community garden workday since Covid yesterday. The last two summers, we could garden but not work together as a group. It makes a huge difference. We got more done and the garden looks much better. And our souls felt better, at least mine did. I’m glad you have the opportunity to be involved locally.

Grace~ Oh, I read about the pins and thought, I know that excitement of discovering an “old” one! I can picture that so easily. What if you put them in some dirt, dark for a bit?
It sounds like the community has good opportunities for you and your family. How exciting to find this, yes?
Your alter basket is so very real and communicates what holds importance to you. I look, double click and look some more…and think how each item must hold a story, how each story may be told to Emrie or morph into something else ~ a new story or art making (a drawing) or spiritual living. I find comfort in the looking, thinking, guessing and possibly knowing. xo

(((Grace))) I would scratch those bright brass plated safety pins up a bit on some gravel then compost them to rust and buy another set plated in “vintage brass” or “vintage copper”.

We had a garden party this week. Children, staff, parents, plants, snacks made by the older children, bubbles…it was joyous. 🙂 It is good to gather. We all needed it.

that first year i got here in California, i searched
and called. Community Garden. There are, as in all of
California, a lot of “street people” who come and go there.
Their Intention is STRONG to involve them in the
owning of the Garden, the Claiming of the Garden as their own
