they were the third company to make a bid.   They came.  based just on some intuition.

and they were perfect.   Arrived ON TIME…which is a biggie….and after very short discussion set to work.  a crew of 6.  Two Climbers.   a way to the right of this tree was the second,  larger,   one climber for each.   I LOVE watching people work who know exactly what to do moment to moment.  They communicated with whistles.   I loved their equipment…their chain saws are small,  enough to climb with but amazing.   Their ropes and carabiners,  leather body straps,  leg straps with more ropes…….they were like squirrels….they scampered up and down back and forth,  the 4 on the ground hauling and cutting into "managable " pieces.   Two other ones that had broken off and were partially down.   Precision.  Within 4 hours they were finished and loading to leave.   no other trees were sacrificed.
To repeat….these trees needed to come down to obtain the building permit.   Had they fallen on their own,  it would have been into the construction.   No insurance possible.   and so….no way out.   There are feelings,   how we are changing the Hill with our presence and with this,  in a permanent way.   Here,  i am a squatter.  i could go and leave no sign.

i am drained.   i woke,  off and on from 2 am  not wanting to oversleep…i had to close the Doe Goats in at morning feed so they would not be in the way of this.  Had to have them fed and gated by 8.   i did it.  it's over.

    it is amazing to watch good arborists at work … breath-taking (which is to say, it induces much breath-holding) … and yes, a great sadness to lose trees that are healthy, even knowing there are many more still standing … even when it is all for the good of you and yours

    I have always considered your “place” on the Hill, as that of a “watch-woman” – steward and custodian. Faithful, full of courage, fortitude and awe. No holds barred commentary of observations, reactions, thoughts, ideas. It is always an honor and privilege to read, and in my neuro-divergent mind, I actually hear your voice when reading. I love that which is “said”, and sometimes that which is not.
    Spectacular workers – all of you. These photos remind me so much of my “coming up”. All aspects so familiar. I would have loved being there – the sounds, the sights, the pivotal changes. Thank you so much for bringing us/me with you all in this project. A-mazing

    this one was dry. the other, leaning. both would have
    let go, sooner or later.
    Many of the Sierra Nevada pines are letting go.

    it’s what it’s all been for…years in the making
    from way way back when the Old Cowboy was still living.
    i pass that little meadow, walking, see his mother’s
    lawn chair rocker with the cardboard box that holds
    his eyeglasses, teeth and slippers. He gives me a nod.

    I imagined you walking the property with seedlings to plant replacing the trees that were sacrificed.
