What i couldn’t ever fathom is what took so long to send her back home after they finally to decided to. Once we humans figure out how our self-centeredness and arrogance affect our stewardship and citizenship, it’s going to be too late.
I feel like they are becoming stressed. Animal behavior is changing. We’re documenting it. And still, we’re not changing our behavior.
    Dear orca…

When I was “coming up”, we loved Porpoises and Dolphins! Running a skiff or boat out into the ocean, they will follow along often at the bow of the boat, or play ahead and circle back – grand company. You can find porpoises and dolphins in a list of Alaska Marine Mammals at this link: https://tinyurl.com/mrx3zy3h.
Orcas ~ largest of member of the dolphin family, have//are also called Killer Whales. Boaters are careful to avoid getting close to them – my experience only, where I lived. If out fishing, one leaves the area, as the Orca/killer whale is feeding there. Origin of that descriptor at link: https://tinyurl.com/3ebsa82v
A good buddy of one grand-son, is Lummi (Lhaq’temish, The Lummi People), and attended the ceremony. His personal description closely follows this NPR interview – at the link: https://tinyurl.com/3d6t5df8
This small section of the NPR interview says almost exactly as I feel: “biologist Deborah Giles says they (L-Pod) were unusually social, vocalizing above the water with lots of breaching. Some thought this orca family somehow sensed that her spirit had been released”. Lots of hope in this, for the Orca’s future here on the PNW coast. “released”, back into the continuum.

Living in Maui, we took joy in the yearly return of humpback whales at the start of winter. They journeyed to the islands to give birth, arriving in November and staying until March. You could see their spouting and breaching from standing on coastal roads and it was not unusual during this time of the year, to see a trail of cars stopped and parked on the side of the road. People got out of their cars with binoculars, or simply looking as far as they could, catching glimpses for they were easy to spot, never that far from the shore. We all would look at each other, smiles on our faces, that carried us through the day. To me, this is the the way to see whales, out in their natural habitat, not captured in an aquarium or in some Sea world show…
Many years ago when we lived in CA, we took our 8 yr old girls (twins) on a whale watching expedition from Pillar Point in Half Moon Bay. At the time, this was thought to be a good experience for children. Now we have learned that the traffic from whale watching expeditions can be stressful to the whales..

In late April, I talked to a Monterey Bay Aquarium employee, who intimately knew about the attack by 30 or so orcas on two gray whales in the bay just two weeks before. Then, not long after, there was an attack by “a large group of orcas” in Oregon on a gray whale and her calf. (Maybe the same group, IDK.)
They are aggressive, but not exactly going in for the kill.
Off the coast of Spain, in the Mediterranean, orcas have aggressively attacked large sailing vessels.
    They are so smart.
    We need to listen.

You could probably tell that my main spirit animal is the orca. My other is the cougar. I love all the rest.
