familiar,  but this cycle of season….in profusion.    Everywhere.  Tree dwelling lichen.   Keeps pulling my attention.   I read.

Wiki         Lichen is a composite organism that arises from algae or cyanobacteria  living among filaments of multiple fungi species  in a mutualistic relationship.   There's way more but this sentence is enough for tonight.   and

makes purple dye

I have slowly been collecting pieces that have fallen to the ground after wind storms and am planning on trying it soon as a dye.

windfall lichen from live oaks makes a lovely rust color without the corrosive properties of true rust … and the scent, which lingers in the cloth even after multiple washings, is like none other (which I suppose is a good thing only if you actually like the scent … ha!)

Catching up with The Hill happenings ~ and my oh my, a lot going on! And here ~ oh my goodness – lichen! The joy of seeing your photo, and your researching is heart-music to my ears. I am wicked crazy about lichen and fungi ~ have books and samples and photos galore – oodles. My first experience with lichen dyeing and pigments was with Karen Dillman and Erin Cooper, in Southeast Alaska. Also have Karen’s books, none of them new. At the link, is a short article named “Purple is to Dye For”. And yes, my experimentation produced purples. On wool, cotton, silk, so far. Good time of year here to think about lichen and fungi dyes and pigments.

I simply cannot use this living organism and important part of the ecosystem to make dye. I can only speak for myself but it feels wrong. We all draw our lines in the sand over things. This is one of mine.

i RESPOND to you….this was also the thought for me,
because it would be from just Wondering and wondering is not good enough. Unlike LaceLady who actually MAKES materials of USE and then USES them as she made me the loving Crocheted WEB that warms me every morning on my lap here in this cold world….changes my world with its existence, or someone who might create a Basket
