so….just above,   2nd pic,    is right now just numbers,  no pic…..so i imagine it.       Here we are tho,  me and Emrie in B Garden…hallelujah for school being out and her NOT gone off to Texas   and   me and her,   us ,   in B Garden    and we noticed that the Aloe has 2 children pushed up against her in her pot ,   Emrie  watered  them.  and we talked about her 9 other children ……pic above………that i've done   NOTHING  about   since repoting Her and plopping them into this large pot together   and she was  already gone when i went down again to finish watering and she'd moved the copper pot next to the Mother Aloe   and as i was there,   i saw a glimpse of green in a pile of pine needles next to…..brushed them  aside and

oh jeez

she has evidently sent out children from the drainage holes of her pot………………….eeeeeee………….

and i thought,  am thinking,   about some things Marti had written Early this morning that i'd so much like to put here

because those things and what they set into motion for me have turned into    THIS DAY         Marti……maybe you can somehow put what you wrote this morning into a            comment          here?     could you?    or,   if not,    how could we do it?,  get your words over here?      could we?

If I click on the numbers the image pops up…over the blog itself, so I use the ‘back arrow’ to return to the first image and your words.
Anyway, they all look so vibrant green and healthy!! A whole world of this lil family 🙂 leads me to wonder excitedly – what will happen next on this ever-unfolding place called “The Hill”?

Magnificent mother plant and her offspring; such strong healthy plants and I think of our grandchildren, their resilience, their wonder, their questions, their joy of discovery, their moving forward in this world.
grace is referring to something I wrote yesterday as a result of my granddaughter, who is 15, and going into her second year of high school. She is taking journalism as an elective and she knew it was my college major and that I had also written for my high school newspaper. She wanted to know more and this got me to thinking about my life and asking questions about potential, plans, life goals, etc. These questions led to the big question of have I done all that I set out to do as a young woman? See I never expected to get married, let alone have children. My goal at the age of 17, when I entered college, on scholarships, economic opportunity grants and work study, was to be a foreign correspondent, specializing in Latin America!
Looking back over my life, I can say that I am mostly content with what is but there are those early morning moments when I ask myself, what happened to that firebrand of a young woman that was me?
So I wrote about my high school and college experiences, the honors and recognition that I received and how it was to go to college while a wife and mother of twin girls, her Mom and her Auntie. I gave her a timeline and told her that I am especially thrilled that she is taking journalism next year. I noted how I remembered her as a little girl, notebook in hand, asking questions, loving to write down answers and later, stories
NOW this is long as I had felt the need to share these memories and experiences so bear with me or simply, skip over this:
As an aside, you all know, from coming here over the years, that I am the child of immigrants from Spain who had very little education so it was important to us, especially to my dear Dad.
My journalism classes, both in high school and in college, opened up the world to me. I graduated with honors in high school and in college, with a double major in journalism and political science.
When I was in high school, I wrote for the high school newspaper, becoming a page editor. One summer job of mine was that I wrote an entire teen page for our town’s newspaper. I was paid 25 cents a column inch and I made about $10 a page. The newspaper only came out once a week though so I didn’t make a lot of $ but the experience was great. I was also the yearbook editor, and my yearbook won a regional prize for cover and layout, the first time that our school had been so honored.
My love of journalism continued in college, from Modesto Junior College, CA State University in Stanislaus and CA State University in Sacramento, as I continued to write for the college newspapers. My dream was to continue in journalism and become a foreign correspondent!
On the strength of my ability, grades, and writing, I applied for and won an internship my senior year in college. The internship was called the Capital Experience and one student from every California State college campus was chosen to represent their college. I represented CA State University in Sacramento. I was selected for a wonderful and most prized internship, working an entire semester in the California Legislature for the Speaker of the Assembly’s office, It was an unpaid position but I earned an entire semester’s worth of college credits but I did have to attend night classes at the university, twice a week.
(My college education was delayed when I married, had twins, and moved to various cities as my husband began his computer career. I was the mother of 7 yr old twin girls when I won the internship and was probably given the plum assignment since I was older than many of the other students!) I started college in 1965 and received my degree in 1977.
The Speaker of the Assembly, at that time, was Leo McCarthy and I worked exclusively with his assistant, John DeLury. John was an ex-priest and one of the most interesting people I met at the capital. The Governor of California at that time was Jerry Brown but he did not offer an internship, although he did meet with the interns, once a month, for a brown bag lunch.
My duties consisted of answering correspondence, helping to draft legislation for migrant education, senior services and affirmative action. I also was chosen to meet with many groups, as the Speaker’s representative and gave several talks on the subject of migrant education to various groups. I had met and marched with Cesar Chavez and had worked at a migrant camp one summer when I was 19 so had experience with migrant issues and setting up Head Start, health clinics, rent collection, etc. The camp provided housing for migrant workers and their families. I was the assistant to the manager from the Merced County Housing Authority.
The Capital Internship was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life and I told my granddaughter that I hoped she and her twin brother would have such opportunities as they continued their education.
Why tell all of this and bring it here per grace’s request: BECAUSE having someone who believes in you, in your abilities, who encourages, even though they may not have academic experience as was the case with my Dad and Mom, makes such a difference in a child’s life; it opens the path to life long learning and gifts the child with confidence that they can go forward.

Beautiful story, I am glad you shared! Whether large or small achievements shaped our lives, it is important to recognize it is the children that extends our future. Look at that Mother Aloe, living in a pot, setting her children free into the soil next to her.

I loved reading your story, Marti, and hearing about your accomplishments and your message. And Grace, such a wonder seeing the aloe’s life force and Emrie’s collaboration with it. These are precious moments you have with her.

    to process it
    to appreciate it

Here i am again. it’s Saturday and i study these words.
Taking in, further, the story they tell of determination. How you persevered. but…in the beginnings, had the Aspiration, focused, like an arrow. is how i can weave your story over into mine to see more clearly. What Telling can DO when well shared. Again…i say Thank You. Thank You, dear SisterFriend
