This has nothing to do with oak trees or rivers but it does have to do with noticing shapes, form. Last night here in central New Mexico, we had very fierce winds. Our State Fair is on and the wind warnings and advisories included the tents at the fair, how they might collapse and how we all needed to secure everything loose. This morning, some of my herb pots had fallen over and the basil plant had several broken off sprigs. As I gathered them, I held them up and noticed how the stems branched out, creating miniature canopies and if held upright in a jar, looked like full little luscious green trees. I’ll leave them on the table today to decorate and then tomorrow the basil will be chopped, placed in an ice cube tray, drizzled with olive oil and come winter, I will have basil cubes for sauces, soups and stews…

How many times I look at sky through trees and feel wonder and awe.
A friend of my mom’s, who was an artist once told my mom that she sees not the leaves themselves, but the “space between the leaves”.
Seeing this way amazed my mother, who was creative in the way of words, and was so intrigued by this statement. She shared it with me a zillion moons ago and I’ve always remembered…not because it is a totally unique thought, but because it touched her so.
Thank you for bringing me to the tree filled hill with you.
