so….it's April 22,  right?      isn't it?    i check/checked   again and again…..thinking i must be making some mistake,  but yes,  it is.    the one day of the year we have decided to call    Earth Day

i woke thinking to check it out and going to look,  the news feeds,    finding

nothing.

even my beloved NPR    only until the second to last segment of All Things Considered

I sat on the ground, under the apple tree yesterday, looking up, and seeing new leaf and blossom growth, giving thanks for this since I thought this was the tree’s last year but no, it continues….
No mention of Earth Day whatsoever in local news BUT a dire article in Source NM, a survey on the health of New Mexican forests released on Monday, the day before Earth Day. It stated that, “Tree deaths in New Mexico forests have doubled since 2023, according to a state survey released Monday, driven by insects and stress from prolonged warmer conditions. (Wildfires were also attributed as a condition as well.)
Those deaths include 70,000 acres of conifer trees in 2024, more than twice the 33,000 acres recorded the year prior.
Native insects largely drove the tree damage, according to Victor Lucero, coordinator for the state Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department’s Forest Health Program.
“Especially in bark beetles, longer, warmer and drier conditions stretching further into the fall, these insects can increase the number of generations they have each season,” Lucero told Source NM.
The New Mexico Forest Health Conditions 2024 survey assessed approximately 14 million acres of forests by air across state, private, federal and tribal forests. About 406,000 acres showed damage from disease, insects and drought, a growth of 12%, with 42,000 more acres than last year.”

OK came back because while I could not find local mention of Earth Day yesterday, it appears that some events were hold on April 13th and the New Mexico state parks are holding month long Earth Day events:

Grace~ We went to be out there, in nature…with earth. But, I agree, I did not hear as much as I usually do. I think some of that is that I don’t listen in places I used to, like the radio or local news. But, I also think the news cycle is just so darn full of horrors, it was over shadowed. When I had looked online for this community, I saw that they were doing ‘clean-up’ day and electronic recycle day on the 19th.
I’m so glad we could get out and see giant rock formations and teeny flowers. xo

I was out in the wold on Tuesday, earth day. In the past, this was a celebration with programs at the schools and media circling this day in the calendar. I had to sign some legal documents so was aware of the date, as was the young woman who handled them. She was smiled when I wished her Happy Earth day. We need reminders.
